Valuation of Coastland Resources
Author: Indira Hirway
Publisher: Academic Foundation
ISBN: 9788171885961
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
National income statistics, which form the basis for measuring and monitoring the performance of an economy, do not include environmental resources adequately, with the result that they fail to provide the required inputs for the formulation of sound economic policies particularly in the context of sustainable development Coastal resources are important in a country like India, which is surrounded by sea from three sides, and mangroves, the salt tolerant forest ecosystem that is one of the richest ecosystems in the world, provides a wide range of ecological and economic products and services including carbon sequestration and protection to life and property under severe cyclones and tsunamis. However, mangroves are neglected as their value is not incorporated in the national income data. The present study, which is a methodological study, compiles economic value of mangroves in India and shows that this rich ecosystem contributes significantly to the economy, and it needs to be strengthened in order to promote sustainable development of coastal regions and to protect coastal population from cyclones and tsunamis. Lagoons and estuaries
Author: Sriyanie Miththapala
Publisher: IUCN
ISBN: 9550205215
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 84
Book Description
Coastal lagoons and estuaries, lying at the boundary between ocean and land, house a unique mosaic of habitats, giving rise to high species diversity and the creation of ecotones. They are also ecologically and economically important ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Yet, these coastal ecosystems are facing a gamut of human-induced threats. This booklet is the fourth in the Coastal Ecosystems Series, published in an attempt to address the lack of information available to the general public regarding the threats to coastal ecosystems.

Proceedings of a Conference on Sustainability of Wetlands and Water Resources
Author: Marjorie Holland
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Water-supply
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
The conference focused on recent work in freshwater wetlands [both natural and constructed] with a view toward understanding wetland processes in a watershed context. Since humans have played important roles in watershed dynamics for years, attention was given to the human dimensions of wetland and watershed uses. Contributed sessions were organized on: biogeochemical cycling in wetlands; human health issues related to water; wetland restoration and reforestation; the role of wetlands in agricultural systems; wetlands and USA environmental law; chemical ecology and natural products from wetlands; water and wetlands in science education; and regional water strategies.

Ecology and Conservation of Tropical Marine Faunal Communities
Author: K. Venkataraman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642382002
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 484
Book Description
This book provides insights into various aspects of marine faunal communities in India, which are extremely diverse due to the geomorphologic and climatic variations along the Indian coasts. Consisting of 30 chapters by experts in their respective fields, it is divided into two parts: · Part I: Tropical Marine Faunal Communities · Part II: Ecology and Conservation Part I highlights the diversity and distribution of Foraminifera; sponges associated with seagrass; Polychaeta; Opisthobranchia; oysters; copepods; horseshoe and brachyuran crabs; echinoderms; ascidians; fishes; fish parasites; and sea mammals. Topics of Part II include the status and environmental parameters of benthos; the status of coral reefs; the invasion of snowflake coral; the recovery of bleached corals; the socioeconomics and management of dugong; marine biodiversity conservation and management in India; the assessment of the marine fauna of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act; and marine biodiversity protected areas in India. This book will serve as a valuable reference work for marine scientists, as well as for environmental managers and policy makers.

Desertification and Land Degradation
Author: Ajai
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351115618
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 401
Book Description
Desertification and land degradation are complex phenomena, and we need to understand their causes, consequences, and means to mitigate and combat their impact. Therefore, this book aims to explain the concept and characteristics of drylands, desert and desertification, land degradation, wastelands, and the concept of ecosystem services. It also discusses various types of processes of land degradations, their characteristics, physics and indicators along with mapping, monitoring and assessment of methods involved. Concept of Ocean Biological Deserts is discussed along with international and regional efforts towards combating land degradation and desertification. Key Features: • Provides all the aspect of desertification and land degradation at one place • Includes comprehensive methods to monitor different desertification/land degradation processes • Comprehensive overview of the mapping, monitoring and modelling techniques • Role of space borne data in identifying, monitoring and combating desertification is evaluated and reported with real case studies • Explains the concept of ocean biological deserts, their characteristics and mapping

Corridors and Ecosystems
Author: Council of Europe
Publisher: Council of Europe
ISBN: 9789287152589
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 56
Book Description
Coastal and marine ecological corridors, part of the Pan-european Ecological Network, form part of the migration route of many mobile marine species and are often narrow stretches of water (such as sea straits and river mouths). Shorebirds often move along the coast, itself one long corridor interrupted only by infrastructure and other developments. This study seeks to contribute to the identification of the main marine and coastal ecological corridors in Europe.
