Bioengineering
Author: Igor Paul

ISBN: 1483139441

Pages : 546
Book Description
Bioengineering: Proceedings of the Eighth Northeast Conference focuses on the discussion of scientific programs, methodologies, experiments, and contributions to the advancement of bioengineering, such as in the field of medicine. The book is composed of literature of various authors who have worked diligently in the field of bioengineering. The text starts by discussing the conditions, situations, and experiments on how the human bones and other internal organs react if subjected to stress, fatigue, and other factors. The properties, composition, and reactions of these body parts to different conditions are discussed. Experiments on regional tissue blood flow through hydrogen clearance and on minimizing the effect of gas trapping on static pressure-volume curves of excised lungs are also presented. The book also notes the instrumentation and control systems for clinical vestibular and cardiovascular stress testing. A large part of the selection deals with research on different internal body parts when subjected to different conditions. Supporting these discussions are control measures, findings, suggestions, methodologies, numerical representations, and recommendations. The book is valuable to scholars, researchers, and readers who are interested in the field of bioengineering.

Oil Spill Dispersants
Author: Committee on Understanding Oil Spill Dispersants: Efficacy and Effects
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
Approximately 3 million gallons of oil or refined petroleum products are spilled into U.S. waters every year. Oil dispersants (chemical agents such as surfactants, solvents, and other compounds) are used to reduce the effect of oil spills by changing the chemical and physical properties of the oil. By enhancing the amount of oil that physically mixes into the water, dispersants can reduce the potential that a surface slick will contaminate shoreline habitats. Although called for in the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 as a tool for minimizing the impact of oil spills, the use of chemical dispersants has long been controversial. This book reviews the adequacy of existing information and ongoing research regarding the effectiveness of dispersants as an oil spill response technique, as well as the effect of dispersed oil on marine and coastal ecosystems. Oil Spill Dispersants also includes recommended steps for policy makers faced with making hard choices regarding the use of dispersants as part of spill contingency planning efforts or during actual spills.

Human resources for medical devices - the role of biomedical engineers
Author: World Health Organization
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9789241565479
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This publication addresses the role of the biomedical engineer in the development, regulation, management, training, and use of medical devices. The first part of the book looks at the biomedical engineering profession globally as part of the health workforce: global numbers and statistics, professional classification, general education and training, professional associations, and the certification process. The second part addresses all of the different roles that the biomedical engineer can have in the life cycle of the technology, from research and development, and innovation, mainly undertaken in academia; the regulation of devices entering the market; and the assessment or evaluation in selecting and prioritizing medical devices (usually at national level); to the role they play in the management of devices from selection and procurement to safe use in healthcare facilities. The annexes present comprehensive information on academic programs, professional societies, and relevant WHO and UN documents related to human resources for health as well as the reclassification proposal for ILO. This publication can be used to encourage the availability, recognition, and increased participation of biomedical engineers as part of the health workforce, particularly following the recent adoption of the recommendations of the UN High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth, the WHO Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health, and the establishment of national health workforce accounts. The document also supports the aim of reclassification of the role of the biomedical engineer as a specific engineer that supports the development, access, and use of medical devices within the national, regional, and global occupation classification system.
