The SE Asian Gateway

The SE Asian Gateway PDF Author: Robert Hall
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862393295
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
Collision between Australia and SE Asia began in the Early Miocene and reduced the former wide ocean between them to a complex passage which connects the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Today, the Indonesian Throughflow passes through this gateway and plays an important role in global thermohaline flow. The surrounding region contains the maximum global diversity for many marine and terrestrial organisms. Reconstruction of this geologically complex region is essential for understanding its role in oceanic and atmospheric circulation, climate impacts, and the origin of its biodiversity. The papers in this volume discuss the Palaeozoic to Cenozoic geological background to Australia and SE Asia collision. They provide the background for accounts of the modern Indonesian Throughflow and oceanographic changes since the Neogene, and consider aspects of the region's climate history--

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9787030113146
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 616

Book Description
Distributed by Elsevier Science on behalf of Science Press. Biostratigraphic data are basic to geological and palaeontological research. This book presents up-to-date material and research achievements in biostratigraphy in recent decades in China, and provides a variety of knowledge to lay a solid foundation for geologists and palaeontologists worldwide. It consists of 13 chapters covering 13 major geological systems. Every chapter addresses tectonic sedimentary domains, current biostratigraphic systems, series boundaries, faunal/floral succession, evolutionary trends and bioevents, correlation of the standard columns in China with other part of the world, facies patterns, palaeobiogeography and palaeogeography. * Up-to-date and authoritative data basic to geologic research about China and all Asia * Concepts, procedures and classification follow modern international standards updated to the present * Written by leading Chinese geologists and palaeontologists

Proceedings of the XVth International Congress on Carboniferous and Permian Stratigraphy

Proceedings of the XVth International Congress on Carboniferous and Permian Stratigraphy PDF Author: Theo Edward Wong
Publisher: Edita-The Publishing House of the Royal
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 604

Book Description
A compendium of papers first presented at the fifteenth annual International Congress on Carboniferous and Permian Stratigraphy, this book offers an overview of the latest research on rock formation that took place over 250 million years ago. This ancient sediment, which provides much of the mineral resources we use today, is a key indicator of massive environmental shifts that occurred around the creation of the super-continent Pangea. Organized thematically, the book covers a wide variety of topics, including the structural development of Carboniferous basins, the paleontology of those periods, and Carboniferous and Permian timescales and global correlations. As the contributors demonstrate, a better understanding of the evolution of the earth during the Carboniferous and Permian periods will not only help us find more mineral resources, but will also provide insight into important modern environmental questions.

Compressional Tectonics

Compressional Tectonics PDF Author: Elizabeth J. Catlos
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119773849
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 357

Book Description
A synthesis of current knowledge on collisional and convergent plate boundaries worldwide Major mountain belts on Earth, such as the Alps, Himalayas, and Appalachians, have been built by compressional tectonic processes during continent-continent and arc-continent collisions. Understanding their formation and evolution is important because of the hazards associated with convergent and collisional plate boundaries, and because these mountain belts contain resources such as precious metals, rare earth elements, oil, gas, and coal. Compressional Tectonics: Plate Convergence to Mountain Building reviews our present-day knowledge of the tectonic evolution of the Alpine-Himalayan and Appalachian belts. Volume highlights include: overview of terminology relating to compressional and contractional tectonics discussion of subduction zone dynamics debates over the timing of the collision and convergence of particular subduction and suture zones examples of the different stages in the development of orogenic belts This book is one of a set of three Tectonic Processes: A Global View The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Ecosystems in SE Asia

Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic Ecosystems in SE Asia PDF Author: Eric Buffetaut
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862392755
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
Non-marine Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic formations are widespread in mainland SE Asia. Although the first reports on fossils from some of these formations were published as early as the 1890s, it is only since 1980 that floras and faunas from the Permian, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous of SE Asia have received the attention they deserve. Fieldwork in various parts of Thailand and Laos has revealed a succession of fossil assemblages that now allows a reconstruction of the evolution of continental ecosystems in that part of the world during the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoic. The first papers in this book present the geological background of these floral and faunal successions, as well as historical aspects of their discovery. Descriptions of new taxa and review papers deal with plants, sharks, bony fishes, turtles, crocodilians, dinosaurs and mammal-like reptiles. Papers about the Mesozoic palaeobiogeography, environments and climates of Asia conclude the volume.
