Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Seventeenth Annual Convention of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists: Held at Buffalo, New York, August 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th, 1901 The Seventeenth Convention of the Society, and the first under its recently acquired National Charter, was convened this day with an attendance that fully realized expectations. From Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Boston, and other centres all over the country, the delegations came with full ranks; the husiness sessions were full of interest and the essays and discussions replete with information of practical value; the exhibition hall was spacious and unexcelled for convenience of access, and the number and variety of the exhibits has rarely been equalled; the local hospitalities were among the most lavish ever enjoyed by the Society, the details of the arrangements for the entertainment of the visitors being in competent hands, and altogether the Convention week was one of exceptional pleasure and profit to all the participants. A handsome souvenir publication, compiled by Mr.D. B.Long, of Buffalo, contained descriptions and illustrations of points of interest in and about the city. The Convention headquarters, in the City Convention buildings contained one of the largest and most comprehensive trade exhibitions in the history of the Society. The assembly hall, in which the sessions were held, was profusely decorated with plants and foliage; the walls and columns were wreathed with vines, vases of gladiolus adorned the windows, and the platform presented the appearance of a garden in miniature, being surrounded with cannas, palms and tropical verdure. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Fifteenth Annual Convention of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists: Held at Detroit, Michigan, August 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th, 1899 Of course it will require capital to start the business properly to insure its success; and if it cannot be obtained immediately upon the common stock, we would suggest that the more active members of the Society subscribe to a sufficient amount at once to make up the for which they Shall have issued to them preferred stock, drawing interest at the rate of 6 per cent. Per annum, cumulative, the common stockholders reserving the right to cancel the preferred stock at any time upon the payment of principal and interest. Thus the common stockholders will have not only the profit upon their stock, but also a profit upon their purchases, and at the same time enabling them to buy at a less rate than elsewhere on account of the large volume of business which would come to the department, and from the great ex pense saved in obtaining the business; the business to be carried on upon a cash basis, either by pre-payment of cash when sending the order or by cash draft, with bill of lading attached, drawn upon the purchaser. This department to transact business not only with the members of the Society, but with those who are not members; only members of the Society, and the Society itself, holding common stock of the co-operative Department of Purchase shall participate in the profits of their purchases. An accounting of the business shall be made at the end of every six months, and the profits then declared and paid. We wish it understood that we have discovered no new law or principle, and only wish to urge the Society in carrying out what has already been attempted and found to be successful. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Twentieth Annual Convention of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists: Held at St. Louis, Missouri, August 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th Large and attentive audiences, valuable contributions to the literature of the Society and interesting discussions were features of the Twentieth Annual Meeting of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists. The business meetings, the trade display and the various recreative features fully realized expectations. Absenteeism at the World's Fair was not noticeable, and under the excellent arrangement made by the Executive Committee for forenoon sessions the program each day was completed in time for visits to the Exposition grounds. The weather was seasonable, and apprehensions of semi-tropical heat at St. Louis in mid-summer were not realized. The generous hospitality of the St. Louis Florists' Club was manifested constantly, and its members were untiring in their efforts to promote the comfort and convenience of their guests. The Convention headquarters were at the Exposition Building in the business section of the city, on Olive street, where ample facilities were furnished for both Convention and Exhibition purposes. The entire floor-space of the Exhibition Hall was covered with the trade display, the exhibits being fully as large and elaborate as in any previous year and including many new and attractive specialties. The Convention Hall was handsomely decorated with palms, oak branches, cannas and other flowers. The national colors were conspicuous above and around the platform, and the fronts of the balconies were gaudy with bunting. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Nineteenth Annual Convention of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists: Held at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st, 1903 Again we assemble as a Society to sum up the doings and experiences of another year, to draw conclusions therefrom and determine lines of future activity; as individuals, to meet congenial friends and renew Old friendships, to gain knowledge and enlarge our minds by contact and intercourse with the fore most representatives of our profession. It becomes my duty to make report to you of our transactions and our progress as an organization since the hour of our adjournment one year ago, when we said good-bye to beautiful Biltmore, and voiced in vociferous chorus our gratitude to the good and faithful friends we had found in Dixie land. The story of our Asheville Convention is told in a book of two hundred and ten pages - the largest annual volume ever issued by the Society. Its con tents established the fact that our meeting in the South compared favorably in all respects with its predecessors, that the accompanying exhibition, although of moderate size, was comprehensive and creditable, and that the customary pastimes and entertainments were fully enjoyed. The list of the year's plant introductions in 'america as recorded in the annual report comprised 19 cannas, 17 carnations, 47 chrysanthem'ums, 10 roses, 4 geraniums and 18 miscellaneous plants doubtless a very incomplete list but the best possible with the data at hand. Unquestionably, full and authentic statistics on this line would prove of great service for future reference.
