Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Dental Society: Forty-First Annual Session, Wrightsville Beach, N. C., June 23-25, 1915 I do not know, gentlemen, that I feel quite positive or sure of my self tonight, but I know that I have the pleasant duty to perform of welcoming you to these shores and to this city. However, I am somewhat in the attitude of mind of the New England farmer, who was quite nervously hitching up his horse one day, when his wife asked him: William, where are you going? Why wife, I am going to town to get drunk, but I hate it. That is the way I feel about this. I am not sure of myself in undertaking this speech, be cause, in the last three months, my incisors, I guess you would call them, have been undergoing a readjustment and replacement Of bridges. Crowns have been completed and bridges repaired. In the meantime, while the dentist was building his bridge, I was building a bridge of sighs. And I do not know that I have my articulation in shape. If you presume to criticise, I pass it to Dr. Patterson to make the criticism and will stand by the criticism that he sees proper to make. It is always pleasant to extend to you a most hearty welcome. If the process of welcoming you was not indulged in, we might lose something of the spirit which prompts it, though I am sure I can extend to you a hearty welcome from the dentists of our city. I know that these men exercise and are exercising in our community a broadening view of life, and for these reasons we are glad to have you in our midst. Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Dental Society: Forty-Fifth Annual Session Held at Asheville, N. C., June 25-27, 1919, and Proposed Revised Constitution and by-Laws Members, Ladies and Gentlemen, of the North Carolina Dental Society: Just one year ago you bestowed upon me the highest honor in your power to confer, the presidency of this honorable society; I accepted the trust with justifiable pride in being so honored by you, at the same time, however, fully realizing the great responsibility intrusted to me and my associate Officers. Whatever success may attend this meeting is due entirely to the untiring energy and loyalty Of my associates, who have given unsparingly of their time in order that while here you may receive something worthy of your earnest consideration, something that will not only enrich your mind, but upon your return home, benefit as well your clientele. In no year in the era Of American history has such mammoth advancement been made in every line. Our manufacturers have per formed wonders, our chemists have found themselves without supe riors, our surgeons are the best in the world, and even in that land Of Kultur was found an American dentist to his Satanic Majesty, the Kaiser. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Dental Society, 1938, Vol. 20 The opening session was called to order at 9:30 o'clock a.m., by President Z. L. Edwards. President Edwards: Members of the North Carolina Dental Society, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Sixty-Second Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Dental Society will now please come to order. We will now have the invocation, by Dr. T. A. Cheatham, pastor, Village Chapel, Pinehurst, North Carolina. Dr. T. A. Cheatham: 0 God, our Heavenly Father, on this beautiful morning, in the midst of flowers and blossoms and spring life, we are grateful for the gift of life. We feel that you are the Author and Giver of all good things, and we look to Thee for the inspiration of every good and worthy thing that we do. We not only thank Thee for this gift of life but for the opportunity of contributing our part towards making life more perfect. And so we ask Thy blessings upon us as we meet here together to talk about the things of our profession. Since our last meeting some of our members have been taken from us. On this day we would remember them. We ask Thy blessings upon their families. We feel that they were a part of our fellowship and we pay our tribute to their devotion this morning. We ask Thee to come and meet with us and direct us in all the deliberations of this convention. We ask Thee to plan things which shall further the profession of Dentists. We ask that we may feel the dignity of cooperating with Thee in giving health and life to Thy suffering children. Bless us in all our deliberations, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Dental Society: Annual Meetings 1906, 1907, 1908 It is not in mortals to command success, But we'll do more, Sempronius; we'll deserve it. It is my purpose to briefly speak of the profession of dentistry in North Carolina from its earliest existence, naming a few of the men who practised in the State during those early days, and who set high standards for those who came after to follow. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the North Carolina Dental Society: Thirty-Eight Annual Meeting, Raleigh, North Carolina, House of Representatives; July 3 to July 6, 1912 I believe Dr. Everitt and Dr. Turner are charter members of your Society. I know they have been practicing dentistry long before the Society was organized, and those gentlemen will tell you that if they had not kept up with the improvement and advancement in their profession, they would have had to go out of the profession long years ago. However old and experienced one may be, he must continue to keep up with the rapid advancement of his profession that he may be most successful. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the North Carolina Dental Society: At the Twenty-Ninth Annual Session Held at Winston-Salem, N. C., Commencing June 17th, 1903 The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Dental Society was called to order in Winston-Salem, N. C., June 17, 1903, at 8:30 p.m., by the President, Dr. J. H. Benton. After a musical selection by the Tillinghast Orchestra, the meeting was opened with prayer by the Rev. Dr. H. A. Brown. Mayor O. B. Eaton delivered the address of welcome, as follows: Address Of Welcome. Mr. President, Officers and Members of the North Carolina Dental Association, Ladies and Gentlemen: No more pleasing duty has ever been imposed upon me than that which comes to me tonight, in welcoming to our city this honorable body of men, who are representing such a great and growing organization. Words can but ill convey the general appreciation we feel in having you as our guests. We deem this an occasion of more than ordinary interest, and it is therefore my privilege and pleasure to bring to you the most cordial greetings. So strongly do I feel the difficulty of saying anything worthy of this gathering that I should have been disposed to defer it, had I felt at liberty to decline the service to which I have been invited. I wish, however, by compliance, to express my admiration and high regard for the Dental Association, and I wish to acknowledge my sense of obligation to those through whose industry and skill suffering humanity has been made to rejoice, and faces writhing in pain to break forth into the loudest praise and turn their woe into bright songs of gladness. I wish still more, Mr. President, to express my joy at the progress that you have been making through this organization, not only for your own improvement, but to raise the standard of efficiency for those who would seek this field of labor. We welcome you because we recognize that you rightfully belong to the whole fraternity of working men, born and bred to work, and this honorable mark written upon your brow by the hand of the Almighty identifies you with all classes of working men whether of hand or brain. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bulletin of the North Carolina Dental Society, Vol. 33: Component of the American Dental Association, Containing the Proceedings of the Ninety Third Anniversary Meeting, at the Carolina Hotel, Pinehurst, N. C, May 19, 20, 21, 1949 The Ninety-Third Anniversary Meeting of the North Carolina Dental Society was called to order at 9:30 o'clock a.m. in the Main Ballroom of the Carolina Hotel, Pinehurst, North Carolina, C. W. Sanders, D.D.S., President of the Society, presiding. President Sanders: Ladies and gentlemen, the Ninety-Third Meeting of the North Carolina Dental Society will now be in order. It is my great and happy privilege to introduce to you Rev. T. A. Cheatham, who will deliver the invocation. Let us stand, please. Rev. T. A. Cheatham: Oh God, our Heavenly Father, we are grateful for the gift of life, with all of the many blessings that make life rich and abundant for us, for our beautiful world, for the sunshine and flowers and friendships, for the part that we have in the world's work. We have met together here to consider the vital things of the great profession of dentists, and we request Thy blessing upon them. Guide us in all of the deliberations of this Convention, enlighten us, and give us wisdom and courage to tackle all the problems of our day. Direct us in all that we do with Thy most gracious favor through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. President Sanders: You are always welcome in our midst, Dr. Cheatham. We shall be happy to have you remain with us as long as you desire. I am honored to present to you Mr. Richard S. Tufts, President of Pinehurst, Inc., who will deliver the address of welcome. Mr. Richard S. Tufts: Dr. Sanders, members of the North Carolina Dental Society: I believe, according to our records (and I believe they are right) that it was April 29, 1923, that your Society first convened here in Pinehurst. It seems to me that after a period of 23 years meeting together, that we can consider ourselves old friends, and in welcoming you back to Pinehurst, I do so upon that standpoint. In opening your meeting, you have very frequently called on me to make this address of welcome and in doing so I have often given you a little bit of the history or background and experience of this resort.
