In 1950, nearly 300 of Europe's leading artists, philosophers and writers formed an international society intended to end the Cold War. The European Society of Culture was composed of many of Western Europe's best-known intellectuals, including Theodor Adorno, Julien Benda, Albert Camus, Benedetto Croce, Andre Gide, J. B. Haldane, Karl Jaspers, Carl Jung, Thomas Mann, Henri Matisse, Francois Mauriac, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Paul Sartre, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Albert Schweitzer, among many others; over the next twenty years it would also include many luminaries from the East, such as Bertolt Brecht, Ernst Bloch, Ilya Ehrenburg and Georg Lukacs. Pioneering the earliest political discussions between intellectuals in Eastern and Western Europe that would serve as a model for the activities of the better-known CCF in its efforts to end communism, the ESC went on to create an informal but powerful, 1,600 member-strong cultural and political network across the world in pursuit of dialogue between the Marxist East and the liberal West, and in pursuit of peace and shared cultural values. Here, in this first, comprehensive history of the SEC's early years, Nancy Jachec demonstrates the influence its members had not only on preventing the isolation of Europe's eastern states, but on enabling the flow of people, publications and ideas from the West into the East, thus playing a vital role in introducing the ideals of human rights and cultural rights in the East in the run-up to the signing of the Helsinki Accords of 1975. She also shows the profound impact that the SEC had on the development of post-colonial theory through the exchanges it organised between European and African intellectuals, directly shaping the expectations statesmen like Leopold Sedar Senghor, revolutionaries like Frantz Fanon, and institutions such as Unesco would have of culture in newly emerging countries.

In this report, the types of crimes, the offenders, and the overall disposition of the offenders in Washington, D.C. are analyzed. By Presidential order, a commission was established to make studies, conduct hearings, and compile information on crime in the District of Columbia. Detailed statistics on crime analysis are presented with studies on the serious crimes, frequency, time of occurrence, victim, offender, and other circumstances. A profile of the criminal offender is presented. Major section on the Metropolitan Police Department details its total operation. The court system, sentencing and imprisonment of adults and juveniles is analyzed. Further evaluation is given. Drunkenness offender, pretrial release, mentally ill offender, drug abuse, interrogation, juvenile offender, juvenile delinquency, and the roots of crime are discussed. The appendix contains four studies in the District of Columbia: one on police, one on offenders, one on corrections, and one on delinquency. The first study, a survey of the Metropolitan Police Department, reviews the management, administration, and operations of the department. It examines the traffic, investigation, and youth functions, as well as records management, communications, buildings and equipment, and police community relations. The second study, a description of active juvenile offenders and convicted adult felons in the District of Columbia, characterizes criminals by factors such as family background, location of residence, employment history, and personal data. The third study, the organization and effectiveness of the correctional agencies, discusses the functions and problems of the department of corrections and the parole and probation agencies. The final study analyzes the social environment and delinquency in the District of Columbia.

The twentieth-century American experience with the automobile has much to tell us about the relationship between consumer capitalism and the environment, Tom McCarthy contends. In Auto Mania he presents the first environmental history of the automobile that shows how consumer desire (and manufacturer decisions) created impacts across the product lifecycle--from raw material extraction to manufacturing to consumer use to disposal. From the provocative public antics of young millionaires who owned the first cars early in the twentieth century to the SUV craze of the 1990s, Auto Mania explores developments that touched the environment. Along the way McCarthy examines how Henry Ford’s fetish for waste reduction tempered the environmental impacts of Model T mass production; how Elvis Presley’s widely shared postwar desire for Cadillacs made matters worse; how the 1970s energy crisis hurt small cars; and why baby boomers ignored worries about global warming. McCarthy shows that problems were recognized early. The difficulty was addressing them, a matter less of doing scientific research and educating the public than implementing solutions through America’s market economy and democratic government. Consumer and producer interests have rarely aligned in helpful ways, and automakers and consumers have made powerful opponents of regulation. The result has been a mixed record of environmental reform with troubling prospects for the future.
