Crustacean Farming

Crustacean Farming PDF Author: John F. Wickins
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470995076
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
Crustacean Farming: Ranching and Culture, Second edition. John F. Wickins and Daniel O'C Lee. The second edition of an extremely well-received book, Crustacean Farming, deals with all cultivated crustaceans of commercial significance, shrimp, prawns, crayfish, lobsters, crabs, and spiny lobsters, and examines the criteria by which both the feasibility and desirability of farming proposals are assessed. The characteristics and production methods of farmed and candidate crustacean species are described in sufficient detail to enable areas of profitable involvement to be distinguished form other opportunities presenting only very high risks and possibilities for serious loss. Coverage extends right from broodstock acquisition and management through to the operation of hatcheries, nurseries and on-growing units to key aspects of processing and marketing. New to this second edition are ranching and re-stocking operations together with the culture of ornamental shrimp and small crustaceans used as live food in fish and shellfish hatcheries. The sections on crustacean diseases, genetics and nutrition have been extended in the light of recent research advances. Examples of investment and operating costs of the different culture options are compared and an analysis of current trends in world crustacean markets is presented to assist in economic and financial appraisal. Special consideration is given to the place of crustacean farming within the economics of developing nations in relation to social and environmental impact in order to promote awareness of the wider implications of global developments. The consequences of recent research and technical developments are considered, together with concerns over genetic and animal welfare issues. Specific areas where further advances in technology are needed to improve the reliability or productivity of farming systems are highlighted. This important book is a vital tool and reference work for all those involved with crustacean farming worldwide.

Aquaculture Sourcebook

Aquaculture Sourcebook PDF Author: Edwin S. Iversen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468414283
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
As traditional commercial fishing becomes increasingly expensive and restrictive, aquacultural fish production emerges as a practical viable alternative. The Aquaculture Sourcebook is an introductory text and ready reference for information on the fresh-, brackish-, and salt-water farming of both fish and shellfish, as well as of several important algae. Until now, such material has been available only in scattered publications; but the Aquaculture Sourcebook incorporates all the feasibility data pertinent to farming aquacultural species in North America into one easy-to-use text. It will be welcomed not only by current and future aquaculturists, but also by fisheries, seafood company managers, biologists, teachers, and students. The Aquaculture Sourcebook has been designed to satisfy the needs of fisheries, scientists, and commercial aquaculturists by providing, in a handy and well-organized format, information vital for successful North American aquacultural ventures. Concise details are given for over a hundred individual speices, including not only those raised for human consumption, but also organisms reared for feed, bait, or other purposes. Each entry in this valuable volume covers such relevant material as: *the scientific and common names of the organism *its visual appearance and distinctive characteristics *habitat range specifications *species reproduction and development *age- and growth-related factors *specific parasites an diseases *potential predators and/or competitive species *its prospects for future aquacultural success Key groups of closely related species are discussed in a geographical context, highlighting areas which each will find the habitat best for its survival. Great care has been taken to specify ranges of tolerable salinity and optimum temperature for candidate species, and emphasis has been placed on creating aquacultural environments that replicate those normally habitated in nature. Comprehensive, informative, and accessible to layperson and scientist alike, the Aqualculture Sourcebook is both the perfect desktop reference for anyone establishing an aquacultural facility, and a ready reference to help maintain one.

Bioenergetics and Energy Metabolism in Crustaceans

Bioenergetics and Energy Metabolism in Crustaceans PDF Author: Bhaskar L.V.K.S.
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1329879279
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
Bioenergetics is the study of balance between energy supply and energy expenditure and requires an examination of physiological processes through which energy is transformed in living organisms. Studies on the flow and allocation of energy in biological systems often have, as their ultimate goal, the construction of a budget describing the partitioning of energy within an individual or population. Such budgets are then used to make inference about physiology or ecology in particular explaining why an organism or population does what it is observed to do assuming that energy allocation is the overriding concern. Bioenergetic modelling is an alternative method for estimating feeding rates in a natural population. These models quantify the relationship between feeding rates and growth relative to temperature, body size and activity. Bioenergetic models have been applied to address ecological questions in a wide variety of taxa.

Marine Shrimp Culture

Marine Shrimp Culture PDF Author: A.W. Fast
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483291049
Category : Science
