On Fuzziness

On Fuzziness PDF Author: Rudolf Seising
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642356443
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
The notion of Fuzziness stands as one of the really new concepts that have recently enriched the world of Science. Science grows not only through technical and formal advances on one side and useful applications on the other side, but also as consequence of the introduction and assimilation of new concepts in its corpus. These, in turn, produce new developments and applications. And this is what Fuzziness, one of the few new concepts arisen in the XX Century, has been doing so far. This book aims at paying homage to Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the “father of fuzzy logic” and also at giving credit to his exceptional work and personality. In a way, this is reflected in the variety of contributions collected in the book. In some of them the authors chose to speak of personal meetings with Lotfi; in others, they discussed how certain papers of Zadeh were able to open for them a new research horizon. Some contributions documented results obtained from the author/s after taking inspiration from a particular idea of Zadeh, thus implicitly acknowledging him. Finally, there are contributions of several “third generation fuzzysists or softies” who were firstly led into the world of Fuzziness by a disciple of Lotfi Zadeh, who, following his example, took care of opening for them a new road in science. Rudolf Seising is Adjoint Researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing in Mieres, Asturias (Spain). Enric Trillas and Claudio Moraga are Emeritus Researchers at the European Centre for Soft Computing, Mieres, Asturias (Spain). Settimo Termini is Professor of Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Palermo, Italy and Affiliated Researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing, Mieres, Asturias (Spain)

Columbia

Columbia PDF Author: Philip Chien
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 038727149X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 465

Book Description
In ‘Columbia: Final Voyage’ aerospace writer Philip Chien, who has over 20 years’ experience covering the US space program, provides a unique insight into the crew members who lost their lives in the Columbia disaster. Chien interviewed all seven crew members several times and got to know them as individuals. He reviews in detail their training, their scientific work and other activities during their successful 16-day flight, the background of the accident itself and a detailed first-hand account of what happened that fateful day in February 2003. The author provides a comprehensive and personal look at both the Columbia astronauts and the STS-107 mission, together with a behind-the-scenes account of other people involved in the mission and their personal reactions to the accident. Forward by Jonathan B. Clark, widower of Columbia astronaut Laurel Clark Introduction by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin

These 28 essays recount popular education's history and its multiple uses in the labor movement today: to organize the unorganized, to develop new leaders and activists, and to strengthen labor and community alliances. They explore its other facets: theater and culture, economics education, workplace safety and health, and classroom use and address experiences from Canada and the United States (US)-Mexico border. The essays are "Popular Education" (Bernard); "Popular Education, Labor, and Social Change" (Hurst); "Highlander and Labor" (Williams, Sessions); "Organizing Public Sector Workers in Puerto Rico" (Delp, Outman-Kramer); "Stamford, Connecticut, Case Study" (McAlevey); "Paolo Freire Hits L.A.'s Mean Streets" (Bacon); "Year 2000 Justice for Janitors Campaign" (Arellano);"Las Vegas Hotel Workers Find a Voice" (Lee, Baker); "Empowering the Members' Voice" (Del Valle); "Economic Justice in the Los Angeles Figueroa Corridor" (Haas); "Fighting for a Living Wage in Santa Monica" (Rothstein); "Just Transition Alliance" (View); "Power of Voices" (Williams); "Battle in Seattle" (Brown); "On Theater and the Labor Movement" (Delp, Outman-Kramer); "Forum Theater" (Delp); "Theater for Worker Health and Safety" (Dooley); "Experiences with Popular Economic Education" (Teninty); "Justice for Avondale Workers" (Washington); "Building a Worker Health and Safety Movement" (Delp); "Workplace Learning, Literacy, and English for Speakers of Other Languages" (Chenven); "English Classes at the Union Hall" (Utech); "Labor in the Schools" (Tubach); "Labor Deserves Credit" (Schurman); "Case Method in Labor Leadership Education" (Bernard); "Confronting Trade Policies from the Bottom Up" (Delp, De Lara); and "Worker-Educators and Union Transformation" (Thomas, Martin). Hybrid Dynamical Systems

Hybrid Dynamical Systems PDF Author: Rafal Goebel
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400842638
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
Hybrid dynamical systems exhibit continuous and instantaneous changes, having features of continuous-time and discrete-time dynamical systems. Filled with a wealth of examples to illustrate concepts, this book presents a complete theory of robust asymptotic stability for hybrid dynamical systems that is applicable to the design of hybrid control algorithms--algorithms that feature logic, timers, or combinations of digital and analog components. With the tools of modern mathematical analysis, Hybrid Dynamical Systems unifies and generalizes earlier developments in continuous-time and discrete-time nonlinear systems. It presents hybrid system versions of the necessary and sufficient Lyapunov conditions for asymptotic stability, invariance principles, and approximation techniques, and examines the robustness of asymptotic stability, motivated by the goal of designing robust hybrid control algorithms. This self-contained and classroom-tested book requires standard background in mathematical analysis and differential equations or nonlinear systems. It will interest graduate students in engineering as well as students and researchers in control, computer science, and mathematics.
