Ostracodology - Linking Bio- and Geosciences

Ostracodology - Linking Bio- and Geosciences PDF Author: Renate Matzke-Karasz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402064187
Category : Science

Pages : 269

Book Description
The great diversity of ostracod applications in biology and palaeontology is clearly illustrated by eighteen papers from the 15th International Symposium on Ostracoda. Collectively, the contributions provide a comprehensive update of ongoing research and the latest findings in ostracod sciences. You’ll learn how ostracods are used as model groups in a variety of research studies, ranging from evolutionary biology to climate change.

Rates of Evolution

Rates of Evolution PDF Author: K.S.W. Campbell
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000063690
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
Originally published in 1987 Rates of Evolution is an edited collection drawn from a symposium convened to bring together palaeontologists, geneticists, molecular biologists and developmental biologists to examine some aspects of the problem of evolutionary rates. The book asks questions surrounding the study of evolution, such as did large morphological changes really occur rapidly at various times in the geological past, or is the fossil record too imperfect to be of value in assessing rates of morphological change? What is the measure of ‘rapid’ change? Is stasis at any taxonomic level established? Is it possible to relate genomic and morphological change? What is the role of regulatory and executive genes in controlling evolutionary change? Does the transfer of genetic material between different taxa provide the possibility of increasing evolutionary rates? Featuring contributions from leading researchers, this book will interest anthropologists, palaeontology and scientists of evolution and genetics.

Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of Ostracoda

Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of Ostracoda PDF Author: David J. Horne
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401715084
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 203

Book Description
Ostracoda (Crustacea) are potentially excellent model organisms for evolutionary studies, because they combine an extensive fossil record with a wide recent distribution and therefore allow studies on both patterns and processes leading to extant diversity. The main scientific domains contributing theories, concepts, and data to evolutionary biology are morphology (including ontogeny), palaeontology, genetics, and ecology, and to all of these aspects ostracods can contribute. This is clearly illustrated by the fifteen papers presented under Theme 3 of the 13th International Symposium on Ostracoda (Chatham, UK) in 1997 which are grouped in the present proceedings, one of three volumes resulting from this meeting. The contributions deal with the evolution of both extant and fossil forms (including most of the Phanaerozoic), ecology of both marine and freshwater taxa, and (developmental) morphology of both soft parts and valves. Although the canvas is wide, each paper clearly shows how studies on Ostracoda can be relevant to general theory on evolutionary biology and ecology.
