The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership behavior and the level of shared decision making practiced in their schools. This study sought to answer the following overarching research question: "To what degree is there a relationship between the leadership behaviors of secondary school principals and the level of shared decision making in selected Southeast Georgia schools as perceived by teachers?" Data were collected from secondary school teachers throughout Southeast Georgia using the Leadership Practices Inventory-Observer and the Shared Education Decisions Survey-Revised. Results indicated the highest leader practices identified to be encourage the heart and inspire a shared vision. The highest shared decision making dimension was pupil personnel services, followed closely by curriculum and instruction. Though very little relationship was found between leader behaviors and shared decision making as perceived by teachers, results from this study may be useful to principals who are considering shared decision making opportunities for their faculties. This quantitative case study examined teacher perceptions within one rural, public East Tennessee school district of principal leadership styles based upon Kouzes and Posner's five domains: challenge the process, enable others to act, encourage the heart, inspire a shared vision, and model the way to determine if a dominate domain existed within teacher perception of the principal's leadership style. Principals who understand the effectiveness and impact that different leadership styles have upon the school environment, specifically teacher perceptions, generally identify with a particular style allowing the creation of a positive educational environment (Rowland, 2008). Teacher understanding of principals' leadership styles increased self-awareness and job satisfaction the teacher achieved. Effectively decreasing the chances of teacher burnout and job-related stress (Meador, 2016).

This study examined the perceptions of elementary teachers and elementary principals regarding shared leadership within their schools in four districts in south central Pennsylvania. This mixed-methods study incorporated the use of on-line surveys, open-ended questions, and telephone interviews of elementary teachers and principals to gather perceptions regarding shared leadership. The findings of this study suggest that the majority of the elementary teachers and principals who participated in this study have positive perceptions of the practice of shared leadership in their schools. Recommendations were made by a few participants for increasing shared leadership opportunities for teachers. However, most participants communicated satisfaction with the level of teacher participation in shared leadership.

"This study sought to determine teachers' perceptions of development of their leadership capacity and relational trust when a school shifted from principal-centered leadership toward shared leadership. In this study, shared leadership was defined as occurring when leaders and followers act reciprocally in their leadership actions and roles. The literature reviewed included research on effective school leadership and the characteristics of high performing schools in two large scale studies--Louis et al.'s (2010) Investigating the Links to Student Learning and Shannon and Bylsma's (2007) Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools. This study, based on the participatory action research model, was grounded in the work of Linda Lambert, a prominent theorist in shared leadership who suggests that a collaborative leadership process between teachers and principals is possible and may lead to high capacity, high performing schools. Three sources of data were collected: before-after surveys, reflective essays, and a peer reviewer protocol. The data revealed that teachers perceived an increase in those skills, dispositions, and knowledge features related to leadership capacity after the transition to shared leadership. The findings suggest that shared leadership and its partner, relational trust, play crucial roles in creating leadership capacity among teachers and administrators."--Abstract, p. 1.

Distributed leadership provides school leaders with an opportunity to engage teachers in the leadership process. Sharing leadership in the middle school setting engages teachers in the decision-making process while allowing them to utilize their leadership skills. Creating a culture of shared leadership through distributed leadership, provides school leaders and teachers an opportunity to achieve school related goals together as a team. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between middle school principals use of the dimensions of distributed leadership and teacher engagement in the shared decision-making process. The research questions guiding this study are: 1) What is the relationship, if any, between middle school principals use of distributed leadership practices and teacher engagement in the decision-making process? 2) Is there a difference between middle school teachers’ perceptions of teacher engagement and principal’s use of distributed leadership practices? This research study sample involved middle school teachers from a local school district in South Carolina. The instrument used in this study was the Distributed Leadership Readiness Scale (DLRS). A correlational analysis found a significant positive relationship between teacher engagement and the principal’s use of distributed leadership practices. An analysis of variance revealed no differences among teachers at grade levels 6 through 8 regarding mean scores on any of the four dimensions measured by the DLRS.
