Prevalence of Mucocutaneous Infections as a Risk Factor for Juvenile Periodontitis

Prevalence of Mucocutaneous Infections as a Risk Factor for Juvenile Periodontitis PDF Author: Laura Elizabeth Brown

Pages : 100

Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the overall, self-reported prevalence of mucocutaneous infections in a population of Juvenile Periodontitis patients; evaluate that prevalence based upon mucosal surface involved, gender, race, and age of the patient; and compoare these findings with those from a population of periodonally healthy controls. Thirty-four subjects diagnosed as having Juvenile Periodontitis and 76 periodontally healthy controls were given a questionnaire requesting information concerning prevalence, and age of onset of any of several mucocutaneous infections. The respondents were specifically asked if the infections had been single versus frequent occurrences, and at what age the infections occurred. Disease prevalence was calculated as simple percentages for each mucocutaneous infection for healthy and Juvenile Periodontitis groups, and logistic regression was used to examine the association of mucocutaneous infection with Juvenile Periodontitis and estimate odds ratios (C/ 95%) with the variables of age, gender, and race controlled. There were observable differences in the percentage of individuals reporting frequent occurrences of several of the infections among periodontally healthy and juvenile periodontitis subjects. When associations were investigated with regard to periodontal status and frequent occurrence of infection, the estimated odds ratios for otitis media (2.03), conjunctivitis (2.00), rhinitis (2.38), and upper respiratory infection (2.65) suggested an association with a slight trend toward predictors for Juvenile Periodontitis. Odds ratios for frequent occurrences of otitis media (7.67) and conjunctivitis (6.07) circumpubertally, and upper respiratory infection (3.05) postpubertally were relatively high predictors of Juvenile Periodontitis. This study did show that almost twice as many Juvenile Periodontitis patients (17.6%) as periodoncally healthy patients (9.2%) reported a frequent occurrence of otitis media, and more than twice as many Juvenile Periodontitis subjects (8.8%) as periodontally healthy subjects reported a frequent occurrence of uppoer respiratory infection (3.9%). Only one of these associations, however, approached statistical significance (otitis media, circumpubertally) with a p-value of .08.

Juvenile Periodontitis. Prevalence and Clinical Findings in a Young Military Population

Juvenile Periodontitis. Prevalence and Clinical Findings in a Young Military Population PDF Author: Robert Bousquet

Book Description
The purpose of this study was twofold. One, to determine the prevalence, geographic distribution, sex ratio and racial distribution of juvenile periodontitis in a young, U.S. military population. And two, to document the clinical characteristics of juvenile periodontitis in these patients. The panoramic radiographs of 16,658 U.S. Air Force basic trainees were screened for alveolar bone loss. Forty-four patients were identified as having juvenile periodontitis. Of these, 36 were available for clinical examination. Patients were clinically evaluated for gingival inflammation (GI), plaque (P1I), calculus (CI), probing depths, bleeding upon probing, mobility and balancing interferences. A dental history, medical history and clinical laboratory procedures including fasting blood glucose, Antinuclear Antibody and CBC with differential were accomplished. The patients' age, sex, race and geographical area of enlistment were documented. A full mouth series of radiographs were taken and interpreted for type of bone loss, amount of bone loss (Schei technique), evidence of furcation invasion, and calculus.
