Called "a pioneer contribution" by Church History when it was first published in 1971 as The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement in the United States, this volume has now been revised and enlarged by Vinson Synan to account for the incredible changes that have occurred in the church world during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Synan brings together the stories of the many movements usually listed as "holiness," "pentecostal," or "charismatic," and shows that there is an identifiable "second blessing" tradition in Christianity that began with the Catholic and Anglican mystics, that was crystallized in the teaching of John Wesley, and that was further perpetuated through the holiness and Keswick movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the appearance of modern Pentecostalism. Synan then chronicles the story of the spread of Pentecostalism around the world after the heady days of the Azusa Street awakening, with special attention given to the beginnings of the movement in those nations where Pentecostalism has become a major religious force. He also examines the rise of various mainline-church charismatic movements that have their roots in Pentecostalism. Because of the explosive growth of the Pentecostal movement in the last half of the century, Pentecostals and Charismatics now constitute the second largest family of Christians in the world after the Roman Catholic Church. "This could well be the major story of Christianity in the twentieth century," writes Synan. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1963, volume 2, contains the messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee from April 6 through July 7, 1963, with the exception of messages he gave in a series on the Gospel of John, which are published in Life-study of John (not included in The Collected Works). In the first part of April, Brother Lee was in Los Angeles. At the end of that month he visited San Diego, California, and then returned to Los Angeles for most of May. At the end of May and the first part of June he visited Christian groups in Sacramento, California, and in Eugene, Salem, and Portland, Oregon, before giving a conference in San Francisco. For the remainder of the period he was in Los Angeles. The contents of this volume are divided into eight sections, as follows: 1. Six messages given at a conference in Los Angeles on April 12 through 14. These messages have been published under the title The Four Major Steps of Christ. The published book consists of four chapters. 2. Ten messages given at a conference in San Diego on April 23 through 27. These messages have been published under the title God's Intention concerning Christ and the Church. 3. Four messages given in Los Angeles in Lord's Day morning meetings in May and June. These messages are included in this volume under the title Lord's Day Morning Messages. 4. A series of messages composed from personal notes taken by several individuals in various meetings held throughout the period. These include nine messages given in Los Angeles on Saturday mornings from April 6 through May 25; two messages given in Sacramento on May 30; and a report given in Los Angeles on June 14 concerning Brother Lee's visit to the San Francisco Bay Area and Pacific Northwest. The last two decades have witnessed the growing participation in theological dialogues of non-institutional (free church) movements. This poses a serious challenge to 21st century ecumenism, since ecclesial realities and internal diversity of these movements impede fruitful dialogue in the classical manner. The present volume addresses fundamental aspects of this challenge by a critical study of an exemplary case of such dialogues, the International Roman Catholic-Classical Pentecostal Dialogue (1972-2007). This unique study builds both on primary archival sources and on earlier research on the IRCCPD. After providing an ecumenical profile of the Classical Pentecostal dialogue partner, Creemers demonstrates how fair representation of the Classical Pentecostal movement has been pursued in the course of the dialogue. Next, he gives attention to the ecumenical method of the IRCCPD. First, the development of a dialogue method hinging on “hard questions” is traced, which has allowed a balanced theological exchange between the dialogue partners. Regarding theological method, it is demonstrated that both partners showed a willingness to experiment together by integrating sources of theological knowledge typically distrusted in their own traditions. In conclusion, the analyses are integrated in an overview of challenges and opportunities for dialogue with the Classical Pentecostal movement in the context of ongoing discussions on ecumenical method.
