The Block 1C version of the surface launched HARPOON cruise missile has performance capabilities that cannot be used due to the limitations imposed by the HARPOON Shipboard Command-Launch Control Set (HSCLSC). This thesis is an initial effort to redesign the HSCLCS from the software engineering approach. The HSCLSC system specifications are derived from stated U.S. Navy's requirements and additional features proposed by the authors. The HSCLCS software design is completed in detail through the system definition. Development of the software design continues through the use of system data flow diagrams and their subsequent mapping into the preliminary system software structure. First iteration data structure definitions and functional module descriptions are provided.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Two models are developed for calculating the availability of the Harpoon missile airborne command and launch system (HACLS). The first model is a semi-Markov process. Its assumptions are validated using the subsequently developed computer simulation model. Both models are exercised with parametric variations, the critical parameters being mean time to failure, mean time to repair, and severity of the operating environment. Less critical parameters are maintenance efficiency and, for the simulation only, maintenance time to repair probability distribution. A major discovery in this paper is that the standard definition of availability does not prove to be adequate when used to determine system availability in a complex framework of operations. Navy surface force training has traditionally involved a combination of shore-based and underway training. Recently, however, a number of factors-budgetary, political, and environmental concerns, as well as concerns about quality of life for naval personnel-have prompted Navy training officials to consider reducing underway training time and increasing reliance on shore-based simulators. Current personnel practices, such as rotating crews rather than ships to forward-deployed locations, also suggest that requiring crews to complete their training on the ships on which they will be deployed may be impractical. Finally, technological advances have improved productivity and realism in modeling, simulation, and distributed learning.
