Expedition Relics from High Arctic Greenland

Expedition Relics from High Arctic Greenland PDF Author: Peter R. Dawes
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788763546867
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"Euro-American explorers reached northernmost Greenland in the mid-19th century. Remoteness, desolate tundra, and persistent sea ice have ensured that many historic sites from early (non-Inuit) exploration remained undisturbed by man. Moreover, as the result of the dry polar climate, the physical remains from these expeditions - even cloth, leather, and paper - are generally well preserved. The hundred and two objects registered and described in this book were discovered at thirty-two sites stretching from Baffin Bay to the Arctic Ocean. They derive from nineteen American, British and Danish expeditions of geographical discovery that reached Greenland between 1853 and 1934. Ranging from commonplace to borderline unique, the artefacts give an insight to conditions, life and mere survival on these expeditions, an insight that adds authenticity to the written annals and to a history that is truly dramatic with at least fifty men losing their lives. Beautifully illustrated with no less than 600 images comprising maps, portraits, scenes from the historic sites and superb artefact photography, this book will appeal not just to students of historical archaeology, but to all interested in the exploration of the polar regions."--

Archaeological Research on the Societies of Late Prehistoric Xinjiang, Vol 2

Archaeological Research on the Societies of Late Prehistoric Xinjiang, Vol 2 PDF Author: Guo Wu
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811968896
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
This book presents cutting-edge archaeological materials from Xinjiang, from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. Through a systematic topological study of major archaeological cemeteries and sites, it establishes chronologies and cultural sequences for three main regions in Xinjiang, namely the circum-Eastern Tianshan region, the circum-Dzungarian Basin region and the circum-Tarim Basin region. It also discusses the origins and local variants of prehistoric archaeological cultures in these regions and the mutual relationships between them and neighboring cultures. By doing so, the book offers a panoramic view of the socio-cultural changes that took place in prehistoric Xinjiang from pastoral-agricultural societies to the mobile nomadic-pastoralist states in the steppe regions and the agricultural states of the oasis, making it a must-read for researchers and general readers who are interested in the archaeology of Xinjiang.

Book Description
Excerpt from Prehistoric Relics: An Illustrated Catalogue Describing Some Eight Hundred and Fifty Different Specimens Nearly all of the 7500 collectors of archaeological speci mens have at some time or other wished for an inexpensive, and yet complete, illustrated catalogue. Books we have had in numbers, but they are all expensive, or they cover explorations only. Therefore, there are objections to most of them. Recognizing the call for a collector's book - one that should be for laymen and not for experts - we have compiled the present book, Prehistoric Relics. It will be observed that we have quoted largely from standard authorities. In foot notes we have referred to more than one hundred books, pamphlets and articles upon archaeologic subjects; and students, therefore, will have no trouble in pursuing further reading.
