Arresting God in Kathmandu

Arresting God in Kathmandu PDF Author: Samrat Upadhyay
Publisher: HMH
ISBN: 0547526210
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
From “a major new talent” come short stories set in modern Nepal, about arranged marriages, forbidden desires, and the universal yearning for human connection (Amitav Ghosh). Set in a city where gods are omnipresent, privacy is elusive, and family defines identity, these are stories of men and women caught between their own needs and the demands of their society and culture. Psychologically rich and astonishingly acute, with “a masterful narrative style” (Ian MacMillan), Arresting God in Kathmandu introduces a potent new voice in contemporary fiction. “Upadhyay brings to readers the flavor of Nepal and its culture in this impressive collection of nine short stories. Like Ha Jin’s Bridegroom, Upadhyay’s stories portray the lives of simple yet psychologically complex characters and reveal much about the universal human condition in us all. . . . Upadhyay’s stories leave the reader with much food for thought and will make a good choice for book discussion groups.” —Library Journal

Book Description
A collection of investigations into strange and mysterious phenomena from around the world • Explores ancient and modern sacred sites, places of power, natural wonders, altered states, UFO encounters, and the afterlife • Investigates sites and phenomena in Egypt, China, Ireland, and throughout North America, including Oak Island, Florida’s Coral Castle, Wisconsin’s UFO hot-spot, and giant-built constructions in Illinois • Examines the forgotten or suppressed work of extraordinary personalities, including Jules Verne, Sir Francis Bacon, and the real-life Indiana Jones, Count Byron de Prorok Sharing his personal investigations into a wide range of ancient mysteries and paranormal enigmas in America and abroad, Frank Joseph takes us on a journey into the high strangeness of our world. Beginning with the work of the master builders of antiquity, the author examines Old World connections with New World sacred centers, such as the similarities between Ohio’s Mound City and the pyramids and tombs of the Giza Plateau, as well as ancient American cities of the Sun, China’s Great Pyramid, and the possibility of a Templar treasure on Oak Island. He explores modern sacred sites, such as Iowa’s Grotto of Gems, Tennessee’s Greek Temple of the goddess Athena, and Florida’s Coral Castle. He investigates pre-Columbian sites and underwater pyramids in the Midwest, Wisconsin’s UFO hot-spot, lost Aztec Cities of Gold in Kansas, and giant-built constructions in Illinois. He details how the intriguing acoustics of Newgrange in Ireland are echoed in its spiral carvings. Exploring spiritual uses of altered states, he looks at the practices of Minoan snake handlers, Mayan shamans, and prophets through the ages. Providing his own investigations into classic paranormal phenomena and ancient mysteries, the author also examines evidence of the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, and the Ark of the Covenant. He explores the forgotten or suppressed work of some of history’s most extraordinary personalities, including Jules Verne, Sir Francis Bacon, Mother Shipton, and the real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones, Count Byron de Prorok. He investigates wonders of our natural world, including communication with elemental beings, the numinous secrets of water, and the living soul of matter. Frank Joseph investigates these phenomena not to explain them away, but to expose their power to affect and elevate human consciousness.

The Buddhist Holy Sites of Nepal

The Buddhist Holy Sites of Nepal PDF Author: Nyanang Bhusepa Rinchen DHARLO
Publisher: Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
ISBN: 9387023966
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
This guidebook highlights multiple stupas, temples and other Buddhist holy sites spread throughout Nepal as told in Sutras and Tantras. I am impressed that a detailed explanation of these holy sites, their principal deities, and historical significance are clearly presented in this work. In particular, this book describes in detail three major Stupas and centuries old historical accounts of the Tibetan Lamas who restored and instilled the gilded copper ornamentation of these hallowed sites. Information otherwise not widely known is also covered in this book such as the fact that the great 5th Dalai Lama granted a stipend for a Stupa caretaker, as well as the fact that the great 13th and 14th Dalai Lamas made contributions towards the major restorations of the revered Swayambunath and Boudhnath Stupas. In addition, there is a particularly well researched section on the temple built by Lichavi King Shiva Deva, the grandfather of Princess Bhrikurti, the Nepalese wife of King Songtsen Gampo. It includes the related history of the arrival of Bhrikuti's father King Udaya Deva to Lhasa for sanctuary and her brother, Narendra Deva's successful return to Nepal, fully supported and led by King Songtsen Gampo and his soldiers. I highly recommend this book, "The Marvelous Music of Narratives.” It is worth reading and indeed is a required companion for all pilgrims, especially those new visitors looking for fuller experience of these sites. Lobsang Shastri, Senior Librarian of Buddhist Digital Resource Center and teacher of Tibetan language in the South Asian Studies Department, Harvard University

The Doctrine of Awakening

The Doctrine of Awakening PDF Author: Julius Evola
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1620558556
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
In a probing analysis of the oldest Buddhist texts, Julius Evola places the doctrine of liberation in its original context. The early teachings, he suggests, offer the foremost example of an active spirituality that is opposed to the more passive, modern forms of theistic religions. This sophisticated, highly readable analysis of the theory and practice of Buddhist asceticism, first published in Italian in 1943 , elucidates the central truths of the eightfold path and clears away the later accretions of Buddhist doctrine. Evola describes the techniques for conscious liberation from the world of maya and for achieving the state of transcendence beyond dualistic thinking. Most surprisingly, he argues that the widespread belief in reincarnation is not an original Buddhist tenet. Evola presents actual practices of concentration and visualization, and places them in the larger metaphysical context of the Buddhist model of mind and universe. The Doctrine of the Awakening is a provocative study of the teachings of the Buddha by one of Europe's most stimulating thinkers.
