"This exhibition previews Nicholas Hill’s The Pandemic Portraits project, which since March 2020 has seen the artist enter into a daily regime of creating portraits on saved news pages from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal daily papers. Hill selected pages that headlined an ever changing and frightening narrative about a virus that threatened the global, human population. As the number of infections skyrocketed around the world, he began responding to the daily loss of human life from the COVID-19 pandemic by drawing individual portraits as visual headlines. To determine how to represent the faces behind the overwhelming statistics, Hill scanned the daily editions of both papers for “accidental subjects,” the passers-by or people who appear in the background, who were not the intended subjects of the news photos. Like the victims of the disease, the “found” photographs were of individuals, people with families and friends. If they were to die, they would be mourned. As the pandemic took hold in the United States, an early news article stated that one American was dying every five minutes. The artist used the statistic to guide his process, limiting himself to a maximum of five minutes for each portrait. Sharing food has always been a way to connect with other individuals, to represent oneself to others, to express your community to other communities, and in most cases, to pass down knowledge from generation to generation. You only need to have Wi-Fi on your phone to be connected to your home country with technology. This research-creation project addresses the interconnected areas of food studies, networked publics on Instagram and living through the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through Smallest Narrative Units (Heinz Emingholz) the non-linear animated series entitled Snacks explores how individual Instagram users, that work within the food industry, discuss their love of food and their lived experience of a global pandemic. Both topics: food and the pandemic provide simultaneous paths to discussions of identity, representation, migration, community, care and security. Using research-creation, Loveless's concept polydisciplinamory, online surveys, interviews and animation, I was able to address intersecting themes mentioned regarding food during a time of global crisis. The central claim of this work is that food stirs up personal and communal reflections, fosters a sense of community and provides a unifying common ground. This project resulted in an Instagram series of twelve animated episodes surrounding topics about food. Snacks: Portraits of a Global Pandemic makes a significant contribution by enriching the discussion of portraying food in a global pandemic, both in the series and in its development. This project also contributes to platform studies and animation studies by creating a non-linear non-fiction series for Instagram.

Available for a limited time, this artist’s book by renowned visual artist Tacita Dean explores her chance encounters with objects in the archives of the Getty Research Institute. As the Getty Research Institute artist in residence in 2014–15, Tacita Dean was asked to define a subject and identify a path of research. What she proposed instead was a project titled “The Importance of Objective Chance as a Tool of Research.” Her idea was to allow chance to be her guide. Dean researched randomly, picking out boxes from the collections without knowing their contents, meandering through objects and images from sources as varied as medieval alchemy books to twentieth-century artist letters.
