The general objectives of this study have been to provide basic knowledge about the biology of a large river by determining the quality and quantity of the macroinvertebrates benthic populations of the Mississippi River in the Monticello, Wright County, Minnesota, region; and secondly to provide pre-operational data on the macroinvertebrates in the river before the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant begins operation. Specifically, a five-mile stretch of the river was studied with the goal of evaluating transverse and longitudinal distributions of the macroinvertebrates, their life histories, and the seasonal dynamics of the dominant genera. Various physical and chemical factors which influence the macroinvertebrate populations were also measured. Finally, since very few investigations have dealt with conditions existing in streams and rivers during the winter season, special attention was given to determination of the ecological changes occurring during that time of year, despite extremely difficult operational conditions.

In this study an attempt was made to quantify the population dynamics of a lotic microinvertebrate community. Field samples for this study were collected in conjunction with an environmental monitoring study of a nuclear power plant. The two sampling techniques incorporated in the environmental assessment produced portrayals of two different components of the endemic lotic macroinvertebrate community. Benthic grab sampling produced a portrayal of a sedentary macroinvertebrate community inhabiting the soft mud of Sturgeon Lake and the hard sand of the main channel. The community was diminutive in size and dominated by three taxa: F. Chironomidae, F. Naididae, and F. Tubificide. Seasonal water temperature was known to control the population dynamics of this community; however, in this study, current velocity had an overriding influence. Artificial substrate sampling produced a portrayal of a more mobile segment of the lotic macroinvertebrate community: the drift. The mobile community was larger and more diverse than the sedentary community. It was dominated by immature insects: O. Diptera, O. Trichoptera, and O. Ephemeroptera. The most regularly collected taxa were F. Chironomidae, Hydropsyche sp., Neureclipsis sp., F. Simuliidae, Cheumatopsyche sp., Polycentropus sp., Stenonema sp., and Caenis sp. Population dynamics of the entire mobile community were known to be controlled by seasonal water temperature. Again there was evidence to support overriding influence by additional factors such as current velocity and other aspects of lotic macroinvertebrate ecology or natural history. This study showed consistency with the results of other macroinvertebrate studies conducted within the same study area. Wing dams and shoreline rip-rapping, found within and around the study area, were further implicated as major stabilizing and diversifying agents in the ecology of the lower reaches of Pool #3 of the Mississippi River.

Fly ash from the 527-MW Coal-fired Columbia Generating Station Unit I (Columbia Co., Wisconsin) is discharged as a slurry into an adjacent ashpit. Water from the ashpit is pumped to a ditch that joins the ashpit drain and Rocky Run Creek before they reach the Wisconsin River. Habitat alterations have been noted as relatively minor changes in water quality parameters (e.g., alkalinity, hardness, pH, and turbidity), as increased amounts of some dissolved trace elements (Cr, Ba, Al, Cd, and Cu), and as the precipitation of trace elements (Al, Ba, and Cr) into a floc that coats the stream bottoms. The ashpit drain became an unsuitable habitat for aquatic invertebrates after Columbia I began operating. Rocky Run Creek is still a suitable habitat for many aquatic invertebrates, but evidence of sublethal stresses and habitat avoidance exists.
