It may be horizontal or vertical, fixed or movable, according to circum stances. Movable pieces of wood or iron, formed to slide, or pivotted so as to revolve into fixed sockets, behind gates or doors, are also termed bars. These bars were frequently used during the middle ages; and obtain in some country places in the present day. The moulded and rebated pieces of wood or metal which divide and support the panes of glass in windows are known as sash-rars or window-bars.
