Der moderne Politikbegriff bezieht sich klassischerweise auf jenen gesellschaftlichen Bereich, "in dem die fundamentalen Ordnungs- und Koordinationsprobleme in und zwischen sozialen Verbänden durch verbindliche kollektive Entscheidungen über die Allokation von Gütern, Ressourcen etc. unter dem Einsatz von Macht geregelt werden" (Gebhardt 2003: 1061). Vieldeutiger ist der moderne Religionsbegriff. Er bezeichnet im Allgemeinen einen normativ strukturierten Komplex von Ideen, Verhaltensweisen und Verhaltenspraktiken, deren gemeinsamer Bezugspunkt eine übernatürliche Wirklichkeit ist, die mit einer Sakralisierung sozialer Sachverhalte verknüpft wird, vor allem aber eine letztgültige Sinngebung des individuellen und sozialen Lebens beansprucht (ebd.: 1062). Oder mit den prägnanten Worten von Robert N. Bellah: "Religion is a set of symbolic forms and acts which relate man to the ultimate condition of his existence" (zitiert nach Kelley 1977: 40). Aufgrund historisch different gewachsener Zugänge zum Thema wird das Spannungsfeld von Politik und Religion im europäischen und internationalen Diskurs unterschiedlich betrachtet. Im ersten Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit sollen die Hauptströmungen dieser Diskurse und ihr gegenwärtig aktueller politikwissenschaftlicher Widerhall aufgezeigt werden. Ausgehend von der theoretischen Verortung des hier behandelten Sujets wird im zweiten Teil der genaue Blick auf ein Phänomen der Wechselbeziehung von Politik und Religion gerichtet. Am Beispiel der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika wird die Entstehung, Organisation und Einflussnahme der sog. Christian Right analysiert und damit einer Facette gegenwärtiger Bewegungsforschung Rechnung getragen. Der dritte Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit thematisiert diese Problematik und geht konkret der Frage nach, ob eine solche Einschätzung angemessen ist oder revidiert werden kann. Daran anschließend wird versucht, in einem Ausblick mögliche Entwicklungslinien für das zukünftige Verhältnis zwischen religiös-konservativen Protestanten und den beiden großen Parteien des Landes aufzuzeigen.
