The Political Socialization Effects of Marriage for American Women Voters
Author: Christina M. Coloroso
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
Gender plays a critical role in the development of political behavior. Beginning at the earliest stages of life and continuing through adulthood, males and females are socialized to approach politics in accordance with prevalent gender norms and expectations. Socialization, especially when reinforced by situational and structural factors, aptly prepares women for roles as wives and homemakers rather than effective political actors. Despite these constraints, adult women express robust political preferences distinct from men. Women and men differ in partisan affiliation, ideology, issue and candidate preferences, and general approaches to politics. Combined these disparities are referred to as the Gender Gap. Though adulthood is generally considered a time of political stability, women commonly undergo one final socializing event which virtually eliminates the Gender Gap; marriage. This thesis examines the political socialization effects of marriage for women, using the American National Election Studies 2000, 2002 and 2004 Full Panel Survey. Results of logistic regressions indicate that as women transition from singlehood to marriage, they are significantly more likely to also change their political preferences to mirror those of their spouse.

Voting For Women
Author: Kathy Dolan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429971737
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 199
Book Description
This book explains how voters evaluate women candidates, who votes for them, and why. Women comprise an ever-increasing percentage of the candidate pool for elective office in the United States. Public opinion surveys profess strong support for female candidaes, yet many of these same candidates still encounter skepticism (at best) or hostility (at worst) from the public. The role of candidates gender in elections is a complex one. Yet, our understanding of how voters react to these women is often based on election-specific, anecdotal, or hypothetical evidence. Voting for Women is one of the first book-length treatments of both how the public evaluates female candidates and whether and when people will support them at the polls. It also provides a history of women and elections in the U.S. and analysis of contemporary data on how voting environments can influence women's success.

Women Voters in Indian Elections
Author: Sanjay Kumar
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000424863
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
This book looks at different dimensions of political participation of women voters in India. Elections in India have witnessed an increasing electoral participation of women, both as political actors and as voters. Taking note of this positive development, the book looks at what has contributed to this increased turnout among women voters in Indian elections and discusses in detail the factors that facilitate or hinder this participation. Drawing on empirical data from 11 Indian states, it looks at key issues like the voting behaviour and political activities of Indian women; individual and motivational factors affecting participation; the political socialization of women at home; the role of internalized patriarchy and political opinions; along with the challenges faced by women in attaining representation in Indian politics. An important contribution in the study of voting patterns, this book will be indispensable to scholars and researchers of political studies, women’s studies, gender studies, sociology, Indian politics, political sociology, voting behaviour and South Asian studies. It will also be useful for journalists and activists.
