Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0 (A), Free University of Berlin (Institute for English Philology), course: The Pre-Raphaelites in Art and Literature, 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In 1848, at the peak of British industrialism and urbanization, a group of artists founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a movement which revolted against contemporary academic art. Searching for new themes of a higher truth and purity, the group did not only turn to artistic and literary sources of the Medieval Ages, the Renaissance and Romanticism but also to the poetic work of the contemporary Victorian Alfred Lord Tennyson. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the poet laureate shared a poetic affinity with medieval literature and culture. The Middle Ages provided an ideal counter world of romance, chivalry, simple order, and religious faith. In an era of modern science, Darwinism, and religious scepticism, Tennyson found his sources of inspiration in Arthurian legends and Shakespearian drama. Between the mid 19th century and the end of World War I, Pre-Raphaelite artists produced a great number of paintings and illustrations, ie. the illustrated Moxon Edition of Poems (1857), based on the work of Alfred Tennyson. Significant thematic fascination was directed towards early romantic maiden poems, i.e. "Mariana" and "The Lady of Shalott", both published in 1832 and revised in 1842. This research paper will examine the structure, atmosphere, and symbolism of these Tennysonian ballads and analyze the corresponding paintings of John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and John William Waterhouse.

I want to be drawn into the poem, want to feel part of what is written and want to be able to see the images of the words in my own thoughts. The question therefore must be how a poet achieves such an effect in the reader. This paper will examine closely some of the means used by the two poets, Kenneth Slessor and Judith Wright, to make their language embody the image they are trying to convey. The paper will at first focus especially on short, individual passages to examine the use of stylistic devices and use of sound. The second part will focus on the bigger picture and look at the poem as a whole, examining the use of recurring images and themes. Judith Wright’s poem Woman to Man reaches its climax in the last line of the poem in which a mother confesses the fear that comes alongside the birth of her child. The two lines before this confession seem to intensify the feeling of danger and threat that ultimately leads to the mother’s fear. [...]

The idea of preserving the voices and experiences of teachers who navigated a new reality due to the COVID-19 global pandemic was the starting point of the project Teacher-Poets Writing to Bridge the Distance: An Oral History of COVID-19 in Poems. This anthology offers readers the poems shared across 39 collected oral histories: 166 poems. We extracted the poems from the transcripts to show the line breaks and stanzas intended by the teacher-poets. In the margins of the pages, the white spaces, this anthology also holds the meaningful connections and the sense of community that developed during the interviews where teacher-poets witnessed one another's lives. The oral history interviews are available for public access at Oklahoma Oral History Research Program where you can listen to the teacher-poets' emotions, reactions, and insights elicited by reading their poetry. By doing this, revisiting poems written a year prior, teachers re-witness, with perspective offered only by time, the impact of COVID-19 on them as teachers and on education more broadly.
