Book Description
Poe’s works are characterized by an overarching sense of melancholy, a fact often viewed by critics as an echo of his own tragic experiences. His characters are reclusive, with a fondness for deep contemplation as in the case of “A Tell-Tale Heart.” Reading further into the nuances of some of his works in the light of a global pandemic, it has been noticed that Poe plays with isolation – or quarantine – to form a canvas upon which he lets his characters paint themselves. This anthology includes some of Poe’s finest works which can be read, and hopefully, open new avenues of interpretations owing to our newfound familiarity with quarantine and how it affects the psyche

The Masque of the Red Death
Author: Edgar Allan Poe
Publisher: Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 13
Book Description
"The Masque of the Red Death", originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy", is an 1842 short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ballwithin seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. Prospero dies after confronting this stranger, whose "costume" proves to contain nothing tangible inside it; the guests also die in turn. Poe's story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death, though some critics advise against an allegorical reading. Many different interpretations have been presented, as well as attempts to identify the true nature of the titular disease. The story was first published in May 1842 in Graham's Magazineand has since been adapted in many different forms, including a 1964 film starring Vincent Price.

Quarantine Stations at Ports of Entry
Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030909951X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 335
Book Description
To mitigate the risks posed by microbial threats of public health significance originating abroad, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) places small groups of staff at major U.S. airports. These staff, their offices, and their patient isolation rooms constitute quarantine stations, which are run by CDC's Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ). Congress began to allocate funds in fiscal 2003 for the establishment of new quarantine stations at 17 major U.S. ports of entry that comprise airports, seaports, and land-border crossings. In a significant departure from the recent past, both the preexisting 8 quarantine stations and the new 17 are expected to play an active, anticipatory role in nationwide biosurveillance. Consequently, DGMQ asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene an expert committee to assess the present CDC quarantine stations and recommend how they should evolve to meet the challenges posed by microbial threats at the nation's gateways. DGMQ specifically requested "an assessment of the role of the federal quarantine stations, given the changes in the global environment including large increases in international travel, threats posed by bioterrorism and emerging infections, and the movement of animals and cargo." To conduct this assessment and provide recommendations, IOM convened, in October 2004, the Committee on Measures to Enhance the Effectiveness of the CDC Quarantine Station Expansion Plan for U.S. Ports of Entry. At the sponsor's request, the committee released the interim letter report Human Resources at U.S. Ports of Entry to Protect the Public's Health in January 2005 to provide preliminary suggestions for the priority functions of a modern quarantine station, the competences necessary to carry out those functions, and the types of health professionals who have the requisite competences (Appendix A). This, the committee's final report, assesses the present role of the CDC quarantine stations and articulates a vision of their future role as a public health intervention.

ISBN: 9240082433
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
The Joint External Evaluation (JEE) team would like to express its appreciation to the Republic of Azerbaijan for volunteering to conduct a JEE. Azerbaijan's response to COVID-19 and its participation in the JEE and other global public health initiatives have consistently demonstrated Azerbaijan's political commitment, foresight, leadership and accountability in building and maintaining the country's core capacities to implement the IHR. In 2019 Azerbaijan embarked on preparations for the JEE. Preparing for the JEE was then delayed as Azerbaijan prioritized their effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic; including strengthening health care capacities to treat COVID-19 cases; increasing vaccination, including implementation of innovative digital systems for vaccination promotion and administration; and enhancing its surveillance system. The JEE team wholeheartedly acknowledges Azerbaijan's voluntary participation in the JEE process and the decision to continue with the evaluation after the pandemic response, appreciates the country's dedicated engagement with the external team and express its gratitude for the warm hospitality and collegiality extended to the team. It is commendable that Azerbaijan and all nations which volunteer to undergo the JEE process demonstrate their unwavering commitment to strengthening global health security.
