Proposed Method for Placing Freshly Mixed Concrete in the Deep Ocean
Author: R. D. Rail
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Concrete
Languages : en
Pages : 54
Book Description
Potential applications for placing concrete in the deep ocean are basically in three areas: in situ construction of seafloor structures, foundations and massive anchors for fixed ocean facilities, in situ hardening of objects on the seafloor, and containment of hazardous substances for environmental protection. This report presents a method for in situ placememt of fresh concrete on the seafloor in which concrete is mixed on a surface platform and transported to the seafloor via a pipeline suspended from the platform. The proposed development integrates existing technologies of the concrete, oilwell, and marine industries and extends them to new applications in a new environment, and would require a modest development effort as well as simulated tests to verify engineering assumptions based on extrapolation of existing knowledge to the new conditions. The proposed method would greatly extend the Navy's capability to place concrete in the deep ocean for the above applications which would require concrete to be placed underwater in quantities of hundreds and thousands of cubic yards in water depths of many thousands of feet. (Author).

Concrete in the Marine Environment
Author: P.K. Mehta
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1851666222
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
Concrete has clearly emerged as the most economical and durable material for the building of the vast majority of marine structures. Reinforced concrete too has overcome the technological problems making it a suitable material for the construction of advanced marine structures such as offshore drilling platforms, superspan bridges and undersea tunnels. As the world becomes increasingly ocean-oriented for energy and other resources it is predicted that construction activities during the 21st century will be dominated by concrete sea structures. The performance of concrete in the marine environment is presented here in a logical manner giving state-of-the-art reviews of the nature of the marine environment, the composition and properties of concrete, history of concrete performance in seawater, major causes of deterioration of concrete in the marine environment, selection of materials and mix proportioning for durable concrete, recommended concrete practice and repair of deteriorated marine structures. It is of value to any design or construction engineer responsible for marine structures.

Subaqueous Concrete Placement
Author: Robert J. Odello
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Concrete
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
This paper presents the results of a literature search to explore the adaptability for deep ocean use of present subaqueous concrete placement methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each of the following methods are discussed: tremie, bottom-dump bucket, prepacked, Fabriform, precast, and pumped concrete. The logical manner of comparing methods is by prototypic construction in the deep ocean. (Author).

Marine Concrete Structures
Author: Mark Alexander
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 0081000847
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 506
Book Description
Marine Concrete Structures: Design, Durability and Performance comprehensively examines structures located in, under, or in close proximity to the sea. A major emphasis of the book is on the long-term performance of marine concrete structures that not only represent major infrastructure investment and provision, but are also required to operate with minimal maintenance. Chapters review the design, specification, construction, and operation of marine concrete structures, and examine their performance and durability in the marine environment. A number of case studies of significant marine concrete structures from around the world are included which help to reinforce the principles outlined in earlier chapters and provide useful background to these types of structures. The result is a thorough and up-to-date reference source that engineers, researchers, and postgraduate students in this field will find invaluable. - Covers, in detail, the design, specification, construction, and operation of marine concrete structures - Examines the properties and performance of concrete in the marine environment - Provides case studies on significant marine concrete structures and durability-based design from around the world

Ocean Space Utilization ’85
Author: C.C. Mei
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 4431682848
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 678
Book Description
Ocean development has conventionally been targeted at the exploitation of natural resources, however this trend is gradually changing: Ocean space has itself come to be regarded as a precious resource. Since problems associated with energy, food supply, and population will become even more crucial over the coming years, ocean space is being reevaluated as a means for providing solutions in many of these areas. The future prosperity of mankind will to a large measure be dependent on the manner in which the resources of the oceans are utilized. To develop ocean space effectively, international cooperation is essential since a global perspective is paramount. It is on this basis of cooperation and communication that the present symposium was organized, bringing together experts from all over the world to report current findings in ocean development and to consider areas of future research. The material covered here deals with all aspects of these areas which are now of such of vital importance.
