A Year Inland

A Year Inland PDF Author: Barbara Belyea
Publisher: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
ISBN: 0889208832
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
Anthony Henday, a young Hudson’s Bay Company employee, set out from York Factory in June 1754 to winter with “trading Indians” along the Saskatchewan River. He adapted willingly and easily to their way of life; he also kept a journal in which he described the plains region and took note of rival French traders’ success at their inland posts. A copy of Henday’s journal was immediately sent to the company directors in London. They rewarded Henday handsomely although they were uncertain where he had travelled, what groups he had met on the plains, and what success he had in opposing rival French traders. Since then, uncertainty about Henday’s year inland has increased. The original journal disappeared; only four copies, dating from 1755 to about 1782, are extant. Each text differs from the other three; the differences range from variant spellings to word choice to contradictory statements on vital questions. All four copies are the work of a company clerk, later factor, named Andrew Graham, who used them to support his own views on HBC trading policies. Twentieth-century scholars have based their claims for Henday’s importance as an explorer, trader and observer of Native cultures on a poorly edited transcript of the 1782 text. They have been unaware or careless of the journal’s textual ambiguity. A Year Inland presents all four copies for the first time, together with contextual notes and a commentary that reassesses the journal’s information on plains geography, people and trade.

Indians in the Fur Trade

Indians in the Fur Trade PDF Author: Arthur J. Ray
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442656018
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
First published in 1974, this best-selling book was lauded by Choice as 'an important, ground-breaking study of the Assiniboine and western Cree Indians who inhabited southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan' and 'essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the Canadian west before 1870.' Indians in the Fur Trade makes extensive use of previously unpublished Hudson's Bay Company archival materials and other available data to reconstruct the cultural geography of the West at the time of early contact, illustrating many of the rapid cultural transformations with maps and diagrams. Now with a new introduction and an update on sources, it will continue to be of great use to students and scholars of Native and Canadian history.

Andrew Avelar is saddened by the sudden death of his great-grandfather, Guadalupe Robert Avelar. During the will reading, he inherits a journal which contains something so shocking, that neither he nor his family will be willing to understand. His great-grandfather’s life as a cartoonist has been a huge cover-up. His great-grandparents were one of the greatest treasure hunters who ever lived. In the journal, he is sworn not to tell anyone about his real occupation. Upset of the truth, Andy agrees. One week later, the truth of the journal’s contents is revealed with his U.S. history teacher who happens to read it. Determined to get the journal away from Andy and his family, the teacher is shot and killed by hulking assassin who is determined to steal the journal for his boss. Andy escapes and now finds out the journal left several clues to find one of the biggest treasures hidden since the Civil War. The man who is now after Andy is the nephew of another well-respected treasure hunter, but this individual is known for killing others for the price of glory. The man, Richard Burke, is determined to get all of the riches to himself and claim back what originally belonged to him, as he believes. With the help of his best friend, his bratty sister, a museum tour guide, and two detectives, they are now on the race to beat Richard Burke and find the treasure before he does. The hunt for the treasure becomes a perilous journey as they are trailed by the police, mercenaries, and Richard’s personal assistants. It’s a hunt that can either make Andy very rich… or cost him and his loved ones their lives!
