Book Description
Traditional methods for image scene interpretation and understanding are based mainly on such single-threaded procedural paradigms as hypothesize-and-test or syntactic parsing. As a result, these systems are unable to carry out tasks that require concurrent hypothesis testing. This book explores a method for symbolically interpreting images based upon a parallel implementation of a network-of-frames suggested, for example, by Minsky (1975), to describe intelligent processing. The system has been implemented in an object-oriented environment in the logic programming language Parlog++ and includes the propagation of uncertainty through each frame using Baldwin's (1986) formulation. The system is tested with several scenarios of increasing complexity, culminating with legal interpretation of traffic intersection images.

Machine Learning and Image Interpretation
Author: Terry Caelli
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489918167
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 441
Book Description
In this groundbreaking new volume, computer researchers discuss the development of technologies and specific systems that can interpret data with respect to domain knowledge. Although the chapters each illuminate different aspects of image interpretation, all utilize a common approach - one that asserts such interpretation must involve perceptual learning in terms of automated knowledge acquisition and application, as well as feedback and consistency checks between encoding, feature extraction, and the known knowledge structures in a given application domain. The text is profusely illustrated with numerous figures and tables to reinforce the concepts discussed.

New Approaches to Fuzzy Modeling and Control
Author: Michael Margaliot
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789810243340
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
Fuzzy logic has found applications in an incredibly wide range of areas in the relatively wide range of areas in the relatively short time since its conception. It was invented by Lotfi Zadeh, a leading systems expert, so it is perhaps not surprising that system theory is one of the areas in which fuzzy logic has made a profound impact. Fuzzy logic combined with the paradigm of computing with words allows the use and manipulation of human knowledge and reasoning in the modeling and control of dynamical systems. This monograph presents new approaches to the construction of fuzzy models and to the design of fuzzy controllers. The emphasis is on developing methods that allow systematic design on the one hand and mathematical analysis of the resulting system on the other. In particular, the methods described allow rigorous analysis of the stability and robustness of the systems, which are crucial issues in control theory. The first theme of the book is a new approach to the system design and analysis of fuzzy controllers, given linguistic information concerning the plant and the control objective. The new approach, fuzzy Lyapunov synthesis, is a computing-with-words version of the well-known (classical) Lyapunov synthesis method. The second theme of the book is to show that fuzzy controllers are in fact solutions to a nonlinear optimal control problem. The authors formulate a novel nonlinear optimal control problem, consisting of a new state-space model -- referred to as the hyperbolic state-space model -- and a new cost functional and show that its solution is a fuzzy controller. This leads to a new framework for fuzzy modeling and control that combines the advantages of the fuzzyworld, such as linguistic interpretability, and of classical optimal control theory, such as guaranteed stability and robustness.

Generic Object Recognition Using Form And Function
Author: Kevin Bowyer
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814502847
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 154
Book Description
This monograph provides a detailed record of the “GRUFF” research project. The goal of the GRUFF project is to develop techniques for robotic vision systems to recognize objects by reasoning about their intended function rather than matching to a pre-defined database of 2-D object appearances or 3-D object shapes. The contributions of this work are: a demonstration of the feasibility of the “form and function” approach to reasoning about 3-D shapes; a demonstration of the concept of using a small number of knowledge primitives as component building blocks in creating a function-based definition of an object category; and an indexing mechanism to make processing for recognition more efficient without any substantial decrease in correctness of classification. Results are given for the analysis of over 500 3-D shape descriptions created with a solid modeling tool and over 200 shape descriptions extracted from real laser range finder images.
