Book Description
Over the past few decades, research on metaphor has focused almost exclusively on its verbal and cognitive dimensions. In Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising, Charles Forceville argues that metaphor can also occur in pictures and draws on relevant studies from various disciplines to propose a model for the identification, classification, and analysis of 'pictorial metaphors'. By using insights taken from a range of linguistic, artistic and cognitive perspectives for example, interaction and relevance theory, Forceville shows not only how metaphor can occur in pictures, but also provides a framework within which these pictorial metaphors can be analyzed. The theoretical insights are applied to thirty advertisements and billboards of British, French, German and Dutch origin. Apart from substantiating the claim that it makes sense to talk about `pictorial metaphors', the detailed analyses of the advertisements suggest how metaphor theory can be employed as a tool in media studies. Context in its various manifestations plays a key role in the analyses. Furthermore, the results of a small-scale experiment shed light on where general agreement about the meaning of a pictorial metaphor can shade over into other more idiosyncratic but equally valid interpretations. The final chapter sketches the ways in which the insights gained can be used for further research.

The Pictorial Third

The Pictorial Third PDF Author: Liliane Louvel
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429941633
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
The Pictorial Third: An Essay into Intermedial Criticism examines the extent to which poetry intertwines with painting and the visual at large, and studies the singular relationship established between language and image, observesing the modalities and workings of what is termed ‘intermedial transposition‘. By following a critical method of the close analysis of texts, the book examines to what extent the "pictorial" tool may be of help to analyze literary texts and thus enlarge and enrich literary criticism. Examining the technical notions typical of the medium and its history, including perspective, framing, colour, anamorphosis, trompe-l’œil, Veronica veil, still life, portrait, figure, illusion, apparatus, genres and styles, this volume presents a pragmatics of image-in-text and of the visual-in-text as an operative tool. This "pictorial" reading necessarily includes synesthesia and the senses; it also functions as a reading event , or what happens to one when one unawares encounters a picture (be it present in the book or the object of an ekprhasis). Thus the body is eventually given back a role to play. The sensitive approach has its own resonances and the eye or the gaze sometimes sees double in such intermedially oriented texts. This volume proposes to identify the pictorial third as the phenomenon which can be apprehended in terms of effect or affect not only as a concept.

Pictorial Photography in America 1920-1922

Pictorial Photography in America 1920-1922 PDF Author: Pictorial Photographers of America
Publisher: Library of Alexandria
ISBN: 1465541632
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 41

Book Description
To many people photography is merely a mechanical process. To an increasing number, however, photography is being seen as an art, by which personal impressions of nature or human life may be expressed as truly as by the brush. These workers in photography see in it a medium by which the action of light upon sensitive surfaces may be so controlled as really to interpret scenes and persons in the individualistic spirit of a true art. From every part of our country come evidences of the growing appreciation of photography as a pictorial medium. Exhibitions in many museums which have hitherto been indifferent to pictures made with the lens have opened the eyes of the public to the possibilities of the camera. Clubs of photographic workers in various cities have maintained or fostered the movement. The lure of the moving picture has stimulated the interest of countless multitudes in photography, and the occasional presentation of fine pictorial work in this direction has given a prophecy of better things to come. The time, therefore, seems ripe to present in this book a collection of the work of American pictorial photographers in all sections of the country. Many of these workers are members of the organization known as the Pictorial Photographers of America; but the appeal for photographic material for this book has been confined to no one society or club, but has been widely inclusive of associations and individuals, and it is believed that the work here presented is fairly representative of the best American effort along these lines at the present time. It is the hope and intention of the organization that publishes this book to stimulate interest in this branch of pictorial art. This is believed to be the first attempt in America to give a comprehensive presentation of the status of pictorial photography as illustrated by the product of many of its best workers. As such it is commended to the consideration of photographers both professional and amateur, of artists and art lovers, and of the public generally.

Evaluation of Decision Making Performance on Three Pictorial Navigation Displays

Evaluation of Decision Making Performance on Three Pictorial Navigation Displays PDF Author: Marshall A. Narva
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aeronautical instruments
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
"A group of pilots and a group of non-pilots solved two representative types of navigation problems using three map-type navigation displays representing different movement relationships between an aircraft symbol and a ground station symbol. The three displays were as follows: (A) "aircraft movement" display: aircraft symbol translates in x and y and rotates in theta (heading), station symbol (map) is fixed; (B) "mixed movement" display: aircraft symbol fixed in position but rotates in theta, station symbol (map) translates in x and y; (C) "earth movement" display: aircraft symbol is fixed, station symbol (map) translates in x and y and rotates in theta, to indicate change in position and heading. The displays were presented by a static projection technique, with the different movement relationships explained verbally to the subjects. The two types of problems differed in the passage of a command track line either through or not through the position of the aircraft. To solve each problem a directional decision and a heading decision had to be made. A number of measures reflecting the speed and accuracy of these decisions were obtained. For the non-pilots, there were no significant differences in performance attributable to the different movement relationships. For the pilots, a significant interaction between the displays and the problem types was obtained for two of the measures. For the type of problem in which the command track line did not pass through the aircraft position, the "direction to turn" decision was made significantly more rapidly with either the "aircraft movement" display or the "mixed movement" display than with the "earth movement" display. For the same type of problem, significantly fewer reversals were made on those problems with other than a south heading with the "aircraft movement" display than with the "earth movement" display. As no significant difference in performance occurred between the "aircraft movement" and the "mixed movement" displays, it is suggested that the "mixed movement" type of display be subjected to further study, as this type of display has several operational advantages."--Abstract
