A phytoplankton bloom dominated by the pennate diatom Nitzschia curta (Van Heurck) Hasle was observed during January-February 1983 at a receding ice-edge in the Western Ross Sea, Antarctica. The core of the bloom was found between 100-150 Km from the ice-edge. Nitzschia curta cell densities up to 22 x 106 cells/1 were observed. The nanoplankton contributed to 18% (average) of the total biomass. The contribution of another pennate diatom, Nitzschia closterium (Ehrenberg) W. Smith, was significant in two offshore stations (22% and 90%). Other diatom species, dinoflagellates and other phytoplankton groups were very few in number. A wind-driven upwelling event occurred along the ice-edge. The presence of off-shore species (e.g. Nitzschia kerguelensis) close to the ice suggests the existence of an eddy circulation. Results of elemental composition experiments with 10 Antarctic diatoms showed that the C:Si:N ratio for Antarctic diatoms, when compared to the Redfield-Richards ratio for diatoms of other environments, have less carbon and more silicon per unit nitrogen. Comparison of laboratory results with the field data confirms the anomalous elemental composition of the major bloom species observed in the Ross Sea. Blooms like the one observed in this study seem to be restricted to the Western part of the Ross Sea and appear to be produced in inshore waters late in the austral summer.

The era of the exploration of the World Ocean is not yet over: some areas still lack an adequate number of observations. The relationships between the physical, chemical and biological processes, which sustain the life on this planet, are not yet fully understood. In short, knowledge of the oceans is still far from satisfactory. This book covers an important period in the study of one of the last investigated areas of the World Ocean: the Ross Sea, Antarctica. During the 1990s, long-term experiments were conducted in this area as part of the Climatic Long-term Interaction for the Mass balance in Antarctica (CLIMA) project of the Italian National Programme for Antarctic Research (PNRA), providing a wealth of oceanographic information. This book is an outcome of the CLIMA field obser vations and international collaborations with the most important programmes in the Ross Sea-Southern Ocean area. It contributes to the st!ldies of the spatial and temporal variability of Ross Sea water masses and circulation and their relation ship with the Southern Ocean circulation. A comprehensive review of historical data is offered, and new data sets are analysed. The studies presented in this book show that much progress has been achieved during the last decade, but large gaps in our understanding of the physical processes in the Ross Sea are still to be filled. However, these studies contribute significantly to the investigation of some specific aspects regarding the circula tion of the main water masses.

Only a few centuries ago, we knew very little about our planet Earth. The Earth was considered flat by many although it was postulated by a few like Aristotle that it is spherical based on observations that included the study of lunar eclipses. Much later, Christopher Columbus successfully sailed to the West to discover the New World and Ferdinand Magellan’s ship circumnavigated the globe to prove once and for all that the Earth is indeed a sphere. Worldwide navigation and explorations that followed made it clear that the Earth is huge and rather impossible to study solely by foot or by water. The advent of air travel made it a lot easier to do exploratory studies and enabled the mapping of the boundaries of continents and the oceans. But aircraft coverage was limited and it was not until the satellite era that full c- erage of the Earth’s surface became available. Many of the early satellites were research satellites and that meant in part the development of engineering measurement systems with no definite applications in mind. The Nimbus-5 Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) was a classic case in point. The sensor was built with the idea that it may be useful for meteorological research and especially rainfall studies over the oceans, but success in this area of study was very limited.
