Pages : 405

Book Description
Physical Techniques in Biological Research, Volume II, Part A: Physical Chemical Techniques focuses on physical chemical techniques that have been most widely used in the study of molecules of biological significance. This book outlines the theoretical basis of the methods, describes the apparatus and manipulations used, and describes the applications of the techniques by examples. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the basic property that makes the use of isotopes as tracers possible. This text then explains the predicted behavior during separations of chemically reacting systems by digital computer techniques. Other chapters consider the mutual diffusion in a binary system of components A and B. This book discusses as well the migration of charged particles or molecules in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. The final chapter deals with the basic units of electric potential differences. This book is a valuable resource for biological chemists.

Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry

Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry PDF Author: J. A. V. Butler
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483156974
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
Progress in Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Volume 9 reviews developments in biophysics and biophysical chemistry and covers topics such as the kinetics of reactions between hemoglobin and gases; the hydrodynamics of the arterial circulation; visual pigments in humans and animals and their relation to seeing; and gradient centrifugation of cell particles. The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy in certain mechanoreceptors is also discussed. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an overview of the general properties of hemoglobin and its reactions with gases, and how such reactions are affected by temperature. The intermediate compound theory and the combination of sheep hemoglobin with carbon monoxide are also considered. The following chapters explore the diffusion and simultaneous chemical reaction velocity in hemoglobin solutions and red cell suspensions; the hydrodynamic aspects of the arterial circulation; determination of molecular dimensions from light scattering data; and the relation of receptor potentials to the activity of complex mechanoreceptor organs containing hair cells. The final chapter is devoted to the theory and applications of the gradient centrifugation of cell particles. This volume will be of interest to both biophysicists and biochemists.

Chemical Mutagens

Chemical Mutagens PDF Author: Alexander Hollaender
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Book Description
As editor I want especially to thank Dr. Ernst Freese for helpful co operation in preparing these volumes, and to express my appreclatlOn to Drs. Kurt Hirschhorn and Marvin Legator, the other members of the editorial board. Alexander Hollaender January 1971 Preface The purpose of these volumes is to encourage the development and ap plication of testing and monitoring procedures to avert significant human exposure to mutagenic agents. The need for protection against exposure to possibly mutagenic chemicals is only now coming to be generally realized. The recently issued Report of the Secretary's Commission on Pesticides and Their Possible Effects on Health (the Mrak Report-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, December 1969) has made an important start. Its Panel on Mutagenicity recommends that all currently used pesticides be tested for mutagenicity in several recently developed and relatively simple systems. Whether recommendations such as these are actually put into effect will depend on convincing government, industry, and the public that the problem is important, that the proposed tests would be effective, and that they can be conducted at a cost that is not prohibitive. Why is it important to screen environmental agents for mutagenic activity? To those who will read this book, the answer is self-evident. The sine qua non of all that we value and all that we are is our genetic heritage.

Cytology and Cell Physiology

Cytology and Cell Physiology PDF Author: Geoffrey Bourne
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323162010
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 799

Book Description
Cytology and Cell Physiology, Third Edition focuses on cell cytology and physiology as well as recent advances in the techniques in studying cells, including microscopy. It also describes cell membranes, surface, and physiology; cytoplasmic constituents; nucleus and nucleocytoplasmic reactions; enzyme histochemistry and cytochemistry; viruses within cells; and morphology of the cancer cell. Organized into 13 chapters, this edition begins with a historical overview of cytology, the template hypothesis of protein synthesis, and the respiratory function of mitochondria. It then discusses the subcellular components and their centrifugal isolation, some general principles of microscopy, selected physical and physicochemical methods, applications of enzyme histochemistry to electron microscopy, and structure and physical properties of the plasma membrane. The remaining chapters focus on the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, the nucleus and its role in cell metabolism, RNA synthesis and movement, the behavior of viruses within cells, and pathological changes in cells. The book concludes with a chapter on the function and metabolism of cancer cells. This book is highly recommended to cytologists, investigators in the field of pathology, and graduate students in biology, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy.

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483194906
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Physical Techniques in Biological Research, Volume IV: Special Methods presents the methods of determining body fluid volume. This book is composed of six chapters that discuss the techniques of vascular perfusion and evaluate the nature of the electrode reaction. It also demonstrates the certain characteristics of the oxygen cathode. Some of the topics covered in the book are the methods for pressure measurement; techniques in gas volume measurement; modes of gas flow measurement; applications of pressure, volume, and flow measurements; and procedures for gas analysis. Other chapters deal with the contents of perfusion media, the determination of extracellular fluid volume, and an analysis of the components of perfusion apparatus. Applications of ultrasonic fields to the study and alterations of biological systems are presented. The last chapter is devoted to the developments made in the use of flame photometry and its description. The book can provide useful information to doctors, students, and researchers.

Point Sources of Pollution: Local Effects and their Control - Volume II

Point Sources of Pollution: Local Effects and their Control - Volume II PDF Author: Qian Yi
Publisher: EOLSS Publications
ISBN: 1848261683
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 514

Book Description
Point Sources of Pollution: Local Effects and their Control is a component of Encyclopedia of Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Point sources of pollution are the major causes of degradation of ecosystems, and may have significant effects on human health if they are not properly controlled. They can be classified in terms of sources, the discharged media, and the pollutants themselves. Broadly speaking, the sources include municipal and industrial sector activities, and the media include water, air, and solids. Noise is also an important form of pollution. Pollutant compositions from point sources can be vast, varied, and complex, and can vary between different countries and regions. The Theme discusses matters of great relevance to our world such as: Vehicular Emissions; Industrial Pollution; Domestic Pollution; Environmental Pollutants and Their Control; Technologies for Air Pollution Control; and Technologies for Water Pollution Control. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
