Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483194906
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Physical Techniques in Biological Research, Volume IV: Special Methods presents the methods of determining body fluid volume. This book is composed of six chapters that discuss the techniques of vascular perfusion and evaluate the nature of the electrode reaction. It also demonstrates the certain characteristics of the oxygen cathode. Some of the topics covered in the book are the methods for pressure measurement; techniques in gas volume measurement; modes of gas flow measurement; applications of pressure, volume, and flow measurements; and procedures for gas analysis. Other chapters deal with the contents of perfusion media, the determination of extracellular fluid volume, and an analysis of the components of perfusion apparatus. Applications of ultrasonic fields to the study and alterations of biological systems are presented. The last chapter is devoted to the developments made in the use of flame photometry and its description. The book can provide useful information to doctors, students, and researchers.

Nerves, Muscles, and Electricity: An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology

Nerves, Muscles, and Electricity: An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology PDF Author: George Camougis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468413694
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 81

Book Description
For centuries man knew about the lightning of the sky (atmospheric or physical electricity) and the numbing effects from contact with powerful electric fishes (animal electricity). Then, after proper experimentation and a synthetic ration ale, it began to appear that physical and animal electricity were related in fundamental respects. This realization was made at the end of the eighteenth century, since when the pages of history have been replete with exciting dis coveries and developments in electricity and magnetism, electrochemistry, and electrophysiology. It is hoped that this manual will enable some students to relive some of that excitement. The author remembers vividly the excitement when, as an undergraduate, he saw his first action potential. This book is not intended for any particular group of students; it should prove to be of some value to students in secondary schools, colleges, and gradu ate schools. Based on personal experience, the author feels that many teachers will also find it of use. Nor is the manual intended solely as a laboratory manual for an introductory course in neurophysiology. Some of the experiments might be introduced into the formallaboratory schedule of general or animal physiology courses. Alternatively, the various experiments might provide the bases for the beginning of special projects lasting for a full semester or even longer.

Leading Edge Techniques in Forensic Trace Evidence Analysis

Leading Edge Techniques in Forensic Trace Evidence Analysis PDF Author: Robert D. Blackledge
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119591805
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 373

Book Description
Leading Edge Techniques in Forensic Trace Evidence Analysis In-depth exploration of the latest methodologies, tools, and techniques for analyzing trace evidence In Leading Edge Techniques in Forensic Trace Evidence Analysis, distinguished and highly qualified contributors cover the significant advances in methodology and instruments that are now being used to analyze trace evidence in forensic laboratories, including new techniques used to determine authenticity of objects and artifacts (such as Combined Raman/LIBS Microscopy) and those used to analyze surface treatments (such as py-GC-PARCI-MS). The work also covers new evidence types, such as surface-modified fibers, microscopic particles, and shimmer, and provides detailed explanations and practical examples of all of the aforementioned topics. Among the topics covered are: Forensic analysis of shimmer particles in cosmetics samples, glitter and other flake pigments, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Surface acoustic wave nebulization mass spectrometry, forensic applications of gas chromatography vacuum ultraviolet, and spectroscopy paired with mass spectrometry Density determination and separation via magneto-Archimedes levitation and elemental imaging of forensic traces with macro and micro XRF Characterization of human head hairs via proteomics and Raman and surface-enriched Raman scattering (SERS) for trace analysis With detailed explanations of modern methodologies, tools, techniques, and evidence types in trace evidence forensics, along with helpful guidance to put covered concepts into practice, Leading Edge Techniques in Forensic Trace Evidence Analysis serves as an invaluable hands-on reference for scientists in forensic laboratories worldwide.

Physical Chemical Techniques

Physical Chemical Techniques PDF Author: Dan H. Moore
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483194892
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 405

Book Description
Physical Techniques in Biological Research, Volume II, Part A: Physical Chemical Techniques focuses on physical chemical techniques that have been most widely used in the study of molecules of biological significance. This book outlines the theoretical basis of the methods, describes the apparatus and manipulations used, and describes the applications of the techniques by examples. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the basic property that makes the use of isotopes as tracers possible. This text then explains the predicted behavior during separations of chemically reacting systems by digital computer techniques. Other chapters consider the mutual diffusion in a binary system of components A and B. This book discusses as well the migration of charged particles or molecules in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. The final chapter deals with the basic units of electric potential differences. This book is a valuable resource for biological chemists.

Methods of Animal Experimentation

Methods of Animal Experimentation PDF Author: William Gay
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323152252
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
Methods of Animal Experimentation, Volume IV focuses on research problems related to animal experimentation, including aging, nutrition, and environmental studies. It summarizes therapeutic implications of animal experimentation methods to human application. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to inhalation chambers including discussions of the types of inhalation tests, inhalation equipment and technology, methods of generation and measurement of contaminants, and some of the specialized techniques available for the pulmonary exposure of animals. Chapter 2 provides practical information about methods and the auditory abilities of animals. Chapter 3 outlines some basic properties of the vertebrate olfactory systems and summarizes selected experimental methods and findings in olfactory research. The concluding chapter describes the use of vertebrate laboratory animals in gustatory research, including some procedures unique to taste research. Research scientists, medical researchers, and olfaction and gustatory experts will find this book invaluable.

Bioelectric Recording Techniques

Bioelectric Recording Techniques PDF Author: Richard F. Thompson
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483265447
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Bioelectric Recording Techniques Part B: Electroencephalography and Human Brain Potentials is part of the multivolume series Methods in Physiological Psychology. The series begins with the treatment of bioelectric recording techniques in three volumes (Parts A, B, and C). Part B deals with electroencephalography (EEG) and peripheral recording of brain events in man. The book is organized into three parts. The first part deals with EEG recording in animals and man, beginning with a historical review of EEG recording and a comprehensive discussion of modern techniques and experimental problems in recording brain potentials. Also covered are techniques of human EEG recording and abnormal brain activity. The second part deals with evoked human brain potentials. These include a comprehensive discussion of procedures for stimulation and recording of human averaged evoked potentials; methods of analysis of EEG and evoked activity; and the influence of psychological variables and processes on the human averaged evoked scalp potential. The third part treats the contingent negative variation (CNV). This scalp recorded response has occasioned much recent interest, in part because it appears to correlate with ""psychological"" processes.
