Physical Hydrodynamics

Physical Hydrodynamics PDF Author: Etienne Guyon
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198702442
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 547

Book Description
This second edition of Physical Hydrodynamics is a deeply enriched version of a classical textbook on fluid dynamics. It retains the same pedagogical spirit, based on the authors' experience of teaching university students in the physical sciences, and emphasizes an experimental (inductive) approach rather than the more formal approach found in many textbooks in the field. A new edition was necessary as contact between the mechanics and physics approaches and their communities has increased continuously over the last few decades. Today the field is more widely open to other experimental sciences: materials, environmental, life, and earth sciences, as well as the engineering sciences. Representative examples from these fields have been included where possible, while retaining a general presentation in each case. This book should be useful for researchers and engineers in these various fields. Images have an essential place in fluid mechanics, and the illustrations in this edition have been completely revisited and widely improved. An inset of colour photographs is provided to stimulate the interest of readers. Exercises have also been added at the end of a number of chapters.

Physical Fluid Dynamics

Book Description
To classify a book as 'experimental' rather than 'theoretical' or as 'pure' rather than 'applied' is liable to imply umeal distinctions. Nevertheless, some Classification is necessary to teIl the potential reader whether the book is for him. In this spirit, this book may be said to treat fluid dynamies as a branch of physics, rather than as a branch of applied mathematics or of engineering. I have often heard expressions of the need for such a book, and certainly I have feIt it in my own teaching. I have written it primariIy for students of physics and of physics-based applied science, aIthough I hope others may find it useful. The book differs from existing 'fundamental' books in placing much greater emphasis on what we know through laboratory experiments and their physical interpretation and less on the mathe matieal formalism. It differs from existing 'applied' books in that the choice of topics has been made for the insight they give into the behaviour of fluids in motion rather than for their practical importance. There are differences also from many existing books on fluid dynamics in the branches treated, reflecting to some extent shifts of interest in reeent years. In particular, geophysical and astrophysical applications have prompted important fundamental developments in topics such as conveetion, stratified flow, and the dynamics of rotating fluids. These developments have hitherto been reflected in the contents of textbooks only to a limited extent.

Physical Fluid Dynamics

Physical Fluid Dynamics PDF Author: P McCormack
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323147526
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
Physical Fluid Dynamics is a textbook for students of physics that reflects the origins and the future development of fluid dynamics. This book forms a concise and logically developed course in contemporary Newtonian fluid dynamics, suitable for physics and engineering science students. The text is composed of chapters devoted to the discussion of the physical properties of fluids, vortex dynamics, slow viscous flow, and particulate fluid dynamics. An adequate course in the dynamics of real (viscous) fluids, kinematics, equations of motion, boundary-layer theory, and compressible flow is also given. The textbook is intended for junior or senior undergraduate level students of physics and engineering.

Physicochemical Hydrodynamics

Physicochemical Hydrodynamics PDF Author: Ronald F. Probstein
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 1483162222
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Physicochemical Hydrodynamics: An Introduction aims to provide an introduction to physicochemical hydrodynamics (PCH), which deals with the interaction between fluid flow and physical, chemical, and biochemical processes. PCH has applications in many areas of science and technology and is a rapidly expanding field. Emphasis of this book is on rational theory and its consequences, with the purpose of showing the underlying unity of PCH, in which diverse phenomena can be described in physically and mathematically similar ways. The magic of this unity is shown in the similar manner in which solutes concentrate in a flow containing chemically reacting surfaces, reverse osmosis membranes, and electrodialysis membranes or the similarity of particle motions in sedimentation, centrifugation, ultrafiltration, and electrophoresis. Problems are included at the end of each chapter and are ordered following the sequence in which the material is set out. The questions range in difficulty, with most requiring an analytic development, but with some asking only for a descriptive answer. All problems are intended to illustrate the ideas presented, though often the solution goes beyond the explicit discussion in the book, with the answer constituting a generalization or extension of the text material. This book is an essential source of information for students majoring in the field of PCH.

Marine Hydrodynamics, 40th anniversary edition

Marine Hydrodynamics, 40th anniversary edition PDF Author: J. N. Newman
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262534827
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
A textbook that offers a unified treatment of the applications of hydrodynamics to marine problems. The applications of hydrodynamics to naval architecture and marine engineering expanded dramatically in the 1960s and 1970s. This classic textbook, originally published in 1977, filled the need for a single volume on the applications of hydrodynamics to marine problems. The book is solidly based on fundamentals, but it also guides the student to an understanding of engineering applications through its consideration of realistic configurations. The book takes a balanced approach between theory and empirics, providing the necessary theoretical background for an intelligent evaluation and application of empirical procedures. It also serves as an introduction to more specialized research methods. It unifies the seemingly diverse problems of marine hydrodynamics by examining them not as separate problems but as related applications of the general field of hydrodynamics. The book evolved from a first-year graduate course in MIT's Department of Ocean Engineering. A knowledge of advanced calculus is assumed. Students will find a previous introductory course in fluid dynamics helpful, but the book presents the necessary fundamentals in a self-contained manner. The 40th anniversary of this pioneering book offers a foreword by John Grue. Contents Model Testing • The Motion of a Viscous Fluid • The Motion of an Ideal Fluid • Lifting Surfaces • Waves and Wave Effects • Hydrodynamics of Slender Bodies

Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics PDF Author: Benoit Cushman-Roisin
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080916783
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 850

Book Description
Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics PDF Author: Carlos Alberto Dutra Fraga Filho
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030007731
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
This book is based on results obtained over a decade of study and research. It questions the use of dynamic molecular models in the continuum scale providing alternative solutions to open problems in the literature. It provides a physical-mathematical understanding of the differential equations that govern fluid flow and energy transport, serving as a reference to the application of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics in continuum fluid mechanics and transport phenomena. The physical-mathematical modelling of the problems in the continuum scale and the employment of the SPH method for solving the equations are presented. Examples of applications in continuum fluid mechanics with numerical results and discussions are also provided. This literature defends the concepts of continuum mechanics and the application of boundary treatment techniques that do not violate the laws of physics.
