Book Description
A Los Angeles native born in 1932, author Alan K. Weeks is a lifelong railfan who was present at the end of the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railways, taking photos and building memories of the two historic lines that once crisscrossed Southern California. In this monograph, Weeks shares his memories with a new generation of railfans who actively work to preserve the heritage and legacy of the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railways. Alan is a retired Schedule Maker for the Southern California Rapid Transit District (RTD), predecessor to today's Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). He shares his photo collection on various websites, including our own PacificElectric.org. From the days when he would frequent the 5 Line with his childhood box camera to today, Alan Weeks is a Southern California treasure, without whose tireless documentary efforts, we would all be much poorer. We hope you enjoy his memories in Monograph No. 9 from the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society.

Pacific Electric Railway

Pacific Electric Railway PDF Author: Steve Crise
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738575865
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
The Pacific Electric Railway originally provided reliable transportation across more than 1,000 miles of track. Postwar society's affair with the automobile led to the loss of an infrastructure that could have formed the basis for an enviable modern light-rail system, one that current society would be happy to utilize. Authors Steve Crise and Michael Patris look back at the railway and its landscape today. Both serve on the board of the Pacific Electric Railway Historical Society, from whose archives most of these images are taken.

Landscape Urbanism and Green Infrastructure

Landscape Urbanism and Green Infrastructure PDF Author: Thomas Panagopoulos
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039213695
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
This volume examines the applicability of landscape urbanism theory in contemporary landscape architecture practice by bringing together ecology and architecture in the built environment. Using participatory planning of green infrastructure and application of nature-based solutions to address urban challenges, landscape urbanism seeks to reintroduce critical connections between natural and urban systems. In light of ongoing developments in landscape architecture, the goal is a paradigm shift towards a landscape that restores and rehabilitates urban ecosystems. Nine contributions examine a wide range of successful cases of designing livable and resilient cities in different geographical contexts, from the United States of America to Australia and Japan, and through several European cities in Italy, Portugal, Estonia, and Greece. While some chapters attempt to conceptualize the interconnections between cities and nature, others clearly have an empirical focus. Efforts such as the use of ornamental helophyte plants in bioretention ponds to reduce and treat stormwater runoff, the recovery of a poorly constructed urban waterway or participatory approaches for optimizing the location of green stormwater infrastructure and examining the environmental justice issue of equative availability and accessibility to public open spaces make these innovations explicit. Thus, this volume contributes to the sustainable cities goal of the United Nations.
