Book Description
Rheological properties of crumb rubber modified (CRM) binder with wax additive were evaluated at high, intermediate and low temperatures. CRM binders were blended using two wax additives and then artificially short-term and long-term aged using the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and pressure aging vessel (PAV) procedures. Superpave binder tests were carried out on the binders through the rotational viscometer (RV), the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and the bending beam rheometer (BBR). The viscosity properties were evaluated using the RV at two testing temperatures of 135°C and 120°C for three different periods of 30, 120, and 240 minutes. In general, the results of this study concluded that (1) the wax additives in asphalt binder obviously decrease the viscosity; (2) the addition of wax additives is effective to get better the rheological properties of asphalt binder in high-temperature; (3) the rubberized mixes with wax additive are expected to have better haul management; (4) the use of crumb rubber positively influence rutting and cracking properties.

Book Description
Crumb rubber is widely used as an environment-friendly material in asphalt industry to improve pavement performance properties. Warm mixture asphalt (WMA) refers to the technologies which allow a substantial reduction of mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixtures through decreasing the viscosity of asphalt binders. In general, the crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt mixes require higher temperatures compared to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). However, if the technologies of WMA are incorporated, it is predicted to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of rubberized asphalt mixtures. For utilization of rubberized mixes in WMA industry, it is needed to investigate the properties of CRM binders with warm additives depending on CRM contents, additive types, aging states, and other experiment variables. This research investigated CRM binders with wax warm additives, and the objectives included: 1) quantifying viscosity changes dependent upon mixing temperature and hauling period through Rotational viscometer test; 2) evaluating the effect of blending time on viscosity; 3) investigating the performance properties of recycled aged CRM binders containing wax additives through Superpave binder tests; 4) evaluating the microstructural properties using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The following conclusions were drawn based on the comprehensive laboratory investigation: 1) crumb rubber contents and wax types were found to have significant influence on the viscosity properties of CRM binders; 2) CRM binder with wax additive (LEADCAP) showed better rutting and cracking resistance compared to the control CRM binder for all aging states; 3) the wax additive in recycled CRM binder is observed to play an important role in binder properties even after subjecting to long-term aging processes; 4) the microstructures on morphology images seemed to have a good relation with the engineering properties of warm CRM binders.

Performance Properties of Polymer Modified Asphalt Binders (PMA) Containing Wax Additives

Performance Properties of Polymer Modified Asphalt Binders (PMA) Containing Wax Additives PDF Author: Mithil Mazumder

Pages : 76

Book Description
The study presents an experimental evaluation of the rheological properties of control and polymer modified asphalt (PMA) binders containing wax additives and a comprehensive comparison between these two binder types. The control and PMA binders with the additives were produced using two of the available warm asphalt processes (i.e., LEADCAP and Sasobit) and then artificially short-term and long-term aged using the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and pressure aging vessel (PAV) procedures. Superpave binder tests were carried out on the binders through the rotational viscometer (RV), the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and the bending beam rheometer (BBR). In general the results of this study indicated that (1) the addition of wax additives into the control and PMA binders decreases the viscosity, as expected; (2) the reduction in viscosity was quite similar for both the binders with wax additives; (3) the percentage increase of rutting resistance due to the additives was much higher for the control binder, compared to the PMA binder; (4) both the control and PMA binders showed the similar trends in terms of fatigue cracking and low temperature cracking behavior after the addition of wax additives.

High-Temperature Viscosity Performance of Crumb-Rubber-Modified Binder With Warm Mix Asphalt Additives

High-Temperature Viscosity Performance of Crumb-Rubber-Modified Binder With Warm Mix Asphalt Additives PDF Author: Hainian Wang
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Crumb-rubber modifier
Languages : en
Pages : 10

Book Description
The application of crumb-rubber modifier (CRM) in asphalt mixtures has been proven to increase the viscosity of CRM binders. In recent years, warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives have been employed to CRM binders to lower their viscosity at high temperatures, allowing a decrease in the mixing and compaction temperatures. The objective of this research is to investigate the viscosity and storage stability of rubberized WMA binders with different tire rubber concentrations and WMA additives. The tire rubber of 40-mesh, with concentrations of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % by weight of a Superpave performance grade (PG) 64-22 asphalt binder, were used in this study along with the WMA additives, such as Sasobit, RH and Advera. Viscosity tests were conducted on the rubberized WMA binders using the rotational viscometer at four temperatures (135, 160, 177, and 190°C). The statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to quantify the respective effects of the influencing factors on the CRM binder's viscosity. The test results indicated that the addition of crumb rubber could greatly increase the viscosity of asphalt binders, which could be improved continuously at increased crumb-rubber concentrations. However, when considering different WMA additives, the crumb rubber showed different effects on the viscosity of the binder. The three WMA additives could all reduce the viscosity of the CRM binder; in addition, RH had the most significant effect on viscosity reduction. It was also found that the CRM binders with WMA additives had good storage stability. For example, the viscosity of the CRM binder with 10 % rubber concentration and RH only increased by 3.8 % after being stored for 4.5 h.

Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives

Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives PDF Author: Robert Y. Liang

Book Description
Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

Analysis of the Low-Temperature Rheological Properties of Rubberized Warm Mix Asphalt Binders

Analysis of the Low-Temperature Rheological Properties of Rubberized Warm Mix Asphalt Binders PDF Author: Hainian Wang
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Burgers model
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
Warm mix asphalt (WMA) has generated a lot of interest worldwide based on the potential to realize environmental benefits related to lower production temperature and safe disposal of crumb rubber (tires). However, barriers to complete implementation of WMA technology still exist because of the lack of understanding of how different additives affect the performance of crumb rubber modified (CRM) binders. This paper investigates the effects of three WMA additives and crumb rubber concentration on the low-temperature performance of the CRM binders. The WMA additives used in this study were Sasobit, RH, and Advera, and the ambient 40 mesh tire rubber at different concentrations of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % by the weight of asphalt binder were applied in this paper. Burgers model was used to describe the relationship between deformation and time for rubberized WMA binder. The models parameters such as relaxation time, delay time, creep stiffness, m-value and m/S(t)-ratio were applied to evaluate the low-temperature performance of the rubberized WMA binders. Furthermore, the statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was applied to quantify the effects of different WMA additives and crumb rubber concentrations on the rubberized asphalt binders' low-temperature performance. It was found that Advera could be used to enhance the low-temperature performance by enhancing the stress relaxation, whereas RH and Sasobit did not exhibit this ability, thereby weakening the low-temperature performance of the CRM binders. The crumb rubber concentration could significantly increase the rubberized WMA binders' low-temperature performance by influencing the flexural creep stiffness of the control binders.
