Cognitive radio network (CRN) is regarded as a solution to this problem as it utilizes the scarce RF in an opportunisticmanner to increase the spectrumefficiency. InCRN, secondary users (SUs) are allowed to access idle frequency bands opportunistically without causing harmful interference to the PUs. In CRN, the SUs determine the presence of PUs through spectrum sensing and access idle bands by means of dynamic spectrum access. Spectrum sensing techniques available in the literature do not consider mobility. One of the main objectives of this thesis is to include mobility of SUs in spectrum sensing. Furthermore, due to the physical characteristics of CRN where licensed RF bands can be dynamically accessed by various unknown wireless devices, security is a growing concern. This thesis also addresses the physical layer security issues in CRN. Performance of spectrum sensing is evaluated based on probability of misdetection and false alarm, and expected overlapping time, and performance of SUs in the presence of attackers is evaluated based on secrecy rates.

Cognitive radio technology is to improve the inefficient usage of limited spectrum resources when wireless networks coexist. Using this technology, the unlicensed users (secondary users) can opportunistically access the frequency band of licensed users (primary users). There are different kinds of cognitive radio networks. This thesis focuses on the interweave cognitive radio network, where the secondary users are only allowed to access the spectrum holes, i.e., the idle parts of the licensed spectrum band. The main task is to analyze the opportunistic dynamic spectrum allocation method based on selecting the largest available spectrum hole, where the goal is to have the maximum possible transmission rate for secondary users. The objective of this work is to give the service provider an estimation about the load of secondary users in different numbers of channels and various kinds of traffics in primary networks. The work starts with the investigation on the spectrum allocation for secondary users in a network of single-channel primary users. In our analysis, we propose a theoretical model to calculate the probability distribution of the length of the largest available spectrum hole. The contribution of this part is the modeling and performance analysis of the existing conventional method, which selects the largest available spectrum hole. The main contribution is the calculation of the conditional probability of having maximum consecutive idle channels under the condition of a given number of total channels and various number of busy channels. For any given number of channels, this conditional probability gives us the number of consecutive idle channels the secondary user can have, if we know the probability distribution of busy channels taken by primary users. The theoretical model works for any given number of total channels in the licensed frequency band, with numerical and simulation results confirming the precision of the proposed model. Later, we continue our study on the spectrum allocation in a cognitive radio network of multichannel primary users, where the secondary user temporarily takes the largest available spectrum hole. For the performance analysis, we basically need to solve two problems. First, we need to find the probability distribution of busy channels taken by primary users. Second, we need to determine the length of the largest available spectrum hole under the condition of primary users taking different channels. In the case of primary users taking multiple channels, the calculation of the conditional probability of having maximum consecutive idle channels under the condition of a given number of total channels and various number of busy channels, is approximately valid, especially in low-traffic networks. As such, the main contribution in this part is finding the probability distribution of busy channels taken by primary users. The solution scenario is based on a multidimensional Markov chain, with numerical and simulation results verifying the accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, an approximate one-dimensional Markov chain is also proposed to simplify the complicated multidimensional solution. We provide an approximate estimation for the load of the secondary user to avoid the calculation of the complex multidimensional Markov chain. The procedure significantly decreases the complexity, although we lose some information. The main concern in the one-dimensional approximation is to find the departure rates from each state of busy channels. It is actually the main challenge of this part and by approximation we provide the solution. At the end, the performance of the proposed model was validated by numerical and simulation results.

This book explore the scarcity and management of current spectrum issue and proper management in three distinct methodologies. Firstly, Field surveying of spectrum within the range of 0.1 GHz to 3 GHz is done for finding white space. Secondly, white space is managed using user friendly graphical environment programmed in Matlab. Finally, performance is increased by reducing waiting delay in queue for secondary users. Sharing 50% of primary users' data by secondary transmitter, performance is increased up to 41% based on traffic load of incoming data on server and better on high traffic. Wireless Regional Area Network IEEE 802.22 parameters with data rate 24 Mbps is used for simulation in Matlab.

The goal of this thesis is to study performance of cognitive radio networks in terms of total spectrum utilization and throughput of secondary networks under perfect and imperfect sensing for Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and fading channels. The effect of imperfect sensing was studied by applying non-collaborative and collaborative sensing techniques using energy detecting and square law combining techniques, respectively. Spectrum allocation for heterogeneous networks in cognitive radio networks was discussed and a new sharing algorithm that guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) for different secondary users' applications was proposed. The throughput degradation of secondary users due to the activities of the primary users was explored by varying the arrival rate of the primary users in a given spectrum band. Computer simulation showed that increasing the primary user's activity will increase the total spectrum utilization but decreases the secondary users' throughput simultaneously. The effect of the received Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the primary user on the cognitive radio network performance is studied in which, a high SNR of primary users led to a higher throughput of secondary network in AWGN channels compared to Nakagami fading channels. The effect of applying cooperative sensing is also presented in this thesis. As we increased the number of cooperating sensors, the network throughput increased which proves the advantage of applying cooperative sensing. A spectrum allocation algorithm for heterogeneous network model is developed to study the QoS assurance of secondary users in cognitive radio networks. The system performance of the heterogeneous network was investigated in terms of the total spectrum utilization. It is found that, higher number of secondary users, better channel's condition and low required QoS of applications would increase the spectrum utilization significantly. vii In this thesis, the proposed allocation algorithm was applied to the heterogeneous cognitive radio model and its performance was compared to the First Come First Served (FCFS) algorithm in both AWGN and fading channels. The proposed algorithm provided a higher average SNR and spectrum utilization than FCFS algorithm and guaranteed the QoS requirement for applications of secondary users. The effect of imperfect sensing on the system performance was investigated, and it was shown that, as the probability of detection increases the total applications' data rate increases significantly. The proposed algorithm guaranteed the QoS requirement for each application of secondary users. It is expected that the use of cognitive radio (CR) technology for AMI networks will be indispensable in near future. In this respect, a new RPL-based routing protocol is proposed for cognitive radio enabled AMI (CR-AMI) networks. This protocol utilizes a global optimization algorithm to select the best route from the whole network. In addition, the proposed routing protocol explicitly protects primary (licensed) users while meeting the utility requirements of the secondary network. The proposed protocol enhances the quality of service (QoS) of the existing RPL-based routing protocols for CR-enabled AMI networks. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets), Cognitive femtocells provide low-power, low-cost, and short-range wireless broadband access, which achieve higher network capacity and spectrum efficiency. Based on a stochastic geometry approach, the rate coverage of two-tier HetNets with cognitive femtocells is analysed. The closed-form expressions for downlink rate coverage of both networks are derived. Moreover, the impact of frequency reuse on the rate coverage in HetNets is evaluated. At last, according to the overall picture of the research conducted, the main conclusions together with some directions for the future work are presented.
