Since Central Asia is generally considered to be the 'forgetten world' of the former Soviet Union, Central Asian women constitute the 'lost voices' within those regions. Corcoran-Nantes considers how the shift to Western capatalist ideals has affected gender relations in the region. While the uneasy synthesis between socialism and Islam under the Soviet regime offered many women considerable status and personal freedom these gains have been rapidly eroded by 'democrazation.' Corcoran-Nantes shows that the main threat to the socio-political status of women in Central Asia is not Islamic fundamentalism, but the imopsitino of free market principles and Western 'liberal democratic' ideals. As a special consultant to UNESCAP, the author was one of the first researchers to undertake substantial research into the lives of women in the republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the post independence period. This book offers a unique insight into the dynamics of independence for these three republics at a time when few people had the access to the region.

Throughout history, Central Asia has formed an important strategic link between the East and the West and been described as the ‘great pivot’ in the early-twentieth century. This book looks at the relations between the Central Asian states and major external powers. It shows how these nations have kept the fragile geopolitics of the region free of the so-called ‘New Great Game’. This major six-volume project, co-published with Macmillan, covers the historical experience of the peoples and societies of the Caribbean region from the earliest times to the present day. The sixth volume brings this series to an end as it takes in the whole of the modern period from colonial conquest and domination to decolonization; the Cold War from start to finish; the disintegration of the Soviet Union; and the renewed instability in certain areas. Not only did the colonial regimes lay a new patina over the region, but nationalism remoulded all old identities into a series of new ones. That process of the twentieth century was perhaps the most transformative of all after the colonial subjugation of the nineteenth. While it has been the basis of remarkable stability in vast stretches of the region, it has been a fertile source of tension and even wars in other parts. The impact and the results of such changes have been astonishingly variable despite the proximity of these states to each other and their being subject to, or driven, by virtually the same compulsions.
