Book Description
Excerpt from Banks and People As a general principle I am opposed to the Preface. I do not believe in telling people what I propose to say; I prefer to say it. But there are cases where an introduction proves a useful and illuminating adjunct to a book. In the present instance it serves a two-fold mission. It enables me to indicate briefly the object with which this work has been undertaken, and to acknowledge certain sources of information that have been drawn upon, and at the same time expressing my obligations to those whose labours and experiences in the same field have aided in the compilation of these pages. The Evolution of People's Banks (Classic Reprint)

The Evolution of People's Banks (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Donald S. Tucker

Book Description
Excerpt from The Evolution of People's Banks The success of various European systems of cooperative credit has aroused wide interest not only in this country, but also in every civilized nation. Almost every important government in the world has tried at some time to secure for its citizens the benefits of these unique institutions. Finally in 1913 the President of the United States appointed a commission to go to Europe with a larger group assembled by the Southern Commercial Congress, to study, among other aspects of rural life, those cooperative institutions which served farmers. The testimony presented to this commission offered an unusual abundance of source material. But the speed with which that commission was compelled to travel over Europe seemed to leave still some room for investigations of a humbler and more detailed kind, while the fact that this commission devoted its attention primarily to rural credits made it seem desirable to gather some additional material with respect to urban institutions. Thus it happened that the writer of the following pages also spent some months abroad in 1913 trying to gather material for a description of these institutions. Before the results of this investigation were ready for presentation to the public, there was published in this country a remarkable book on Rural Credits by Myron T. Herrick, and R. Ingalls. Substantially half of that work was devoted to a description of Cooperative Credit. This description included urban as well as rural institutions. The People's Banks of Their Organization Under the Recent Law (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from The People's Banks of Their Organization Under the Recent Law It is believed that this problem has, in Germany at least been solved by the adoption of this system Of Association Ship. P\u'blio and private charity or money assistance, how ever creditable to the givers, was found to be worse than useless. The classes whom it was intended to benefit came to regard it as their right, - as a sort of conscience money paid by classes from whom they had suffered injustice and it afforded no stimulus to industry or thrift. Therefore it was that the first banking institutions, founded on charity and not on the principle Of self-help, invariably failed. Their capital was collected by gifts or gratuitous loans, was lent without proof of ability to repay, was received as assist ance due from richer classes. The founders received, instead of thanks, increasing demands; and it need not be said that such institutions, being without any true principle of life, soon fell. People's Banks for Northern India

People's Banks for Northern India PDF Author: H. Dupernex
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365068570
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Excerpt from People's Banks for Northern India: A Handbook to the Organisation of Credit on a Co-Operative Basis MY object in writing this little book, which makes no' particular pretence at originality, is to bring within. Reach of the ordinary resident of Northern India in a handy compass a brief description of the methods of Cc-operative Banking and the principles upon which it is based. Most of the works upon the subject are in foreign languages, and are more or less inaccessible to the public of this country. Until Mr. Wolff published his book on People's Bank, and until Mr. Nicholson's report upon Land and Agricultural Banks was printed, there were few people even in England who had any special knowledge of the subject. Yet the subject is one which should possess absorbing interest to us in India, for it shows what has been done and can be done to overcome one of the greatest economic evils that a nation can suffer from that of Usury while in a lesser degree it offers by the encouragement it affords to thrift a partial solution of a still greater evil - that of Famine. Banks and Bankers (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Richard Page

Book Description
Excerpt from Banks and Bankers A volume of this description, if correctly written in a readable style, must, I apprehend, be accept able to people of all ranks. The matters it relates to intimately concern all our great masses, agricul tural, manufacturing, and commercial; they are not only of the highest importance in their bearings and effects, but they have a particular interest even as subjects of abstract inquiry. If to these cousi derations we add another, - namely, the ignorance so generally and so strangely prevailing amongst us upon the question of money, banking, and cur reney, enough, perhaps, will have been premised to indicate that the work will be likely to find many readers, if justice be done to his undertaking by the author.
