Book Description
To provide a means of obtaining the performance characteristicsof automatic transmissions and automatic transaxles. It outlinesdynamometer tests that map the steady-state characteristics over arange of operations of an automatic transmission/automatictransaxle and provides a method of presenting test data. Thisprocedure must be followed, with similar test facilities so thatresults obtained from different laboratories are comparable. For this SAE Recommended Practice, the transmission is definedas the complete automatic transmission or transaxle assemblybetween the engine and the driveshaft(s) used to effect a ratiochange in transmitting power. This test procedure deals with the aspect of conducting completetransmission and transaxle assembly testing. However, by its verynature a transmission should be viewed as a compilation of threemajor component systems: pump, torque converter, and gearbox (allratio change elements). From a design perspective, it is important that the lossesassociated with each of these components be determined byconducting separate tests of each component under controlled testconditions that simulate the in-transmission operating conditions.Torque converter testing is described in SAE J643. If done withstrict attention to detail it is possible to subtract off the pumpand torque converter losses from the transmission assembly lossesin order to obtain gearbox losses only, eliminating the need toconduct a separate gearbox test.

Book Description
The extent of test conditions on the dynamometer must be sufficient to determine the efficiency characteristics corresponding to the following range of vehicle operations in all gear ratios with locked torque converters (open converter can also be done where appropriate and noted). aEfficiency versus output speed versus input torque bTorque ratio versus output speed cInput speed versus output speed dOutput torque versus output speed eParasitic loss versus input speed (spin losses) fCooler flow gOutput torque bias (front wheel drive transaxles) This Recommended Practice had defined a test procedure and process which gave a reasonably complete description of the efficiency and performance of a 20th century automatic transmission. With the introduction of electronic controls, the number of parameters which control the transmission's operation have expanded extensively and these need to be defined for each test. The interaction between the transmission, the environment, the engine, the cooling and other systems have also made test definition very difficult and complex. Finally, the diversity, the rapid changes, and the component complexity introduced by electric and hybrid drive system combine with the above difficulties to make it impractical to define a Recommended Practice which could provide a meaningful description of performance and efficiency of 21st century automotive transmissions. The existing Recommended Practice J651 is being stabilized to preserve the test procedures for future reference.

Automatic Transmissions - Manual Control Sequence

Automatic Transmissions - Manual Control Sequence PDF Author: Automatic Transmission and Transaxle Committee

Book Description
The scope and purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide a standard pattern or sequence for the manual control of automatic transmissions in passenger cars and light-duty trucks. This generally refers to left hand drive mechanical shift applications. This document is published as Stabilize The J915 content is not fully compliant with current industry developments and as such, may require a different standard. The content within the J915 standard relies on Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 102 and 114. Portions of the J915 standard that are unique may not represent current common practices within the user community. When this standard was initially published, it reflected a common philosophy towards automatic transmission manual controls sequence. Since that time, changing technologies like self-driving cars, satellite controlled driven cars and electric cars may have led members of the user community to have potentially divergent methods for manual controls sequences of automatic transmissions beyond the minimum requirements specified within the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. As a result, a different standard may be required.
