Book Description
A thoughtful, accessible work on the beauty of love and the splendor of the body, inspired by Pope John Paul II. Christianity has long been regarded as viewing the body as a threat to a person's spiritual nature and of denying its sexual dimension. In 1979, Pope John Paul II departed from this traditional dichotomy and offered an integrated vision of the human body and soul. In a series of talks that came to be known as “the theology of the body,” he explained the divine meaning of human sexuality and why the body provides answers to fundamental questions about our lives. In Called to Love, Carl Anderson, chairman of the world’s largest catholic service organization, and Fr. Jose Granados discuss the philosophical and religious significance of “the theology of the body” in language at once poetic and profound. As they explain, the body speaks of God, it reveals His goodness, and it also speaks of men and women and their vocation to love. Called to Love brings to life the tremendous gift John Paul II bestowed on humanity and gives readers a new understanding of the Christian way of love and how to embrace it fully in their lives.

On First Principles

On First Principles PDF Author: Origen
Publisher: Ave Maria Press
ISBN: 0870612808
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
Origen’s On First Principles is a foundational work in the development of Christian thought and doctrine: it is the first attempt in history at a systematic Christian theology. For over a decade it has been out of print with only expensive used copies available; now it is available at an affordable price and in a more accessible format. On First Principles is the most important surviving text written by third-century Church father, Origen. Origen wrote in a time when fundamental doctrines had not yet been fully articulated by the Church, and contributed to the very formation of Christianity. Readers see Origen grappling with the mysteries of salvation and brainstorming how they can be understood. This edition presents G. W. Butterworth’s trusted translation in a new, more readable format, retains the introduction by Henri de Lubac, and includes a new foreword by John C. Cavadini. As St. Gregory of Nazianzus, Doctor of the Church, wrote: “Origen is the stone on which all of us were sharpened.”

Book Description
Excerpt from A Historic Sketch of the Parish Church of St. Michael, in the Province of South Carolina: From the Laying of the Corner Stone in 1752 to 1887, With a Roll of Its Rectors and Assistant Ministers; Wardens, Vestrymen; The Original Pew Owners; Inscriptions From the Mural Tablets, &C The first notice we have of anything appertaining to St. Michael's is, in July, when John Culpepper, Surveyor General, is directed to lay out a Town at Oyster Point, and the site now occupied by St. Michael's, seems to have been reserved for a church, though none was built on it until some years later, when the first St. Philip's was erected. This view of the early laying out of the church-yard is supported by the fact that December 29, some workmen while repair ing the foundations found a coffin just under the first land ing of the stairway to the south gallery and just inside of the southwest pilaster. This coffin was of red-cedar, and the lid was studded with brass tacks which formed the initials O. B. And the figures 1678.
