African-American females are the least active segment of the population during their high school years, with a decline in activity nearly twice that of Caucasian girls. Given that parents serve as role models, providers, and as interpreters of sport and physical activity experiences, it is important to examine whether parents perceive certain activities to be more culturally appropriate than others. The purpose of this study was twofold: one, explore the types of value mothers of high school age African-American girls place on sport and physical activity participation; two, gain a better understanding of the mother's social perceptions of what activities are culturally appropriate for their daughters. Respondents ascribed each type of value to sport/physical activity. Utility value for sport and physical activity was characterized by health/appearance, occupying time/staying out of trouble, opportunity for scholarships/career opportunities. Interest value was characterized by affiliation, perceived acceptance, and mothers' physical activity/sport experience and family structure. Attainment value was characterized by self-perceptions, and cost was characterized by money, academics/time, injury, and appearance. Finally, in order for an activity to be deemed culturally appropriate, it must be accessible, provide opportunities for relatedness, and be perceived to be culturally appropriate by other members of the culture.

"The purpose of this study was to examine family structure, father involvement and physical activity participation among African American adolescent girls. 40 African American adolescent girls volunteered to complete demographic, father involvement and physical activity questionnaires. The predictor variables were family structure (two-parent vs. single-parent and brothers vs. no brothers), overall father involvement and physical activity father involvement. The dependent variable was physical activity participation. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to determine if significant group differences existed. The comparison of means revealed girls from two-parent families (M=43.49) had higher physical activity levels than their single parent peers (M=36.91); however, the one-way ANOVA results indicated these differences were not significant, F(1,38)=.92, p=.34). The comparison of means and ANOVA comparing brother groups and overall father involvement groups indicated no significant differences, F(1,38)=.01, p=.93); F(1,38)=.21, p=.58). The comparison ANOVA between high physical activity father involvement (M=44.39) and low physical activity father involvement (M=30.49) groups indicated significant differences in physical activity participation, F(1,38)=3.92, p

Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. ABSTRACT: Sport is believed to provide a number of benefits, especially to its adolescent participants. However, not all adolescents participate in sport and are thus unable to reap these benefits. Black high school girls have the lowest sport participation rates. Some possible reasons for this are due to the availability of opportunities and the influence of parents and peers. This study used an interview based approach to further address sport participation issues among black girls. Eleven college women were asked to reflect on their experiences and views of sport during their high school years. Many of the reasons for participating in sport echoed those expressed in the current research literature. However, this study adds to the literature by asking how issues regarding social identity affect participation choices.
