Book Description
Excerpt from Papers and Records, 1907, Vol. 8 The unsuccessful attempt to organize an insurrection at the Short Hills, in the Township of Pelham, in June 1838 is an interesting epi sode which has received but scant consideration from most historians of that troubled time. Read' s account is grotesquely inaccurate while Dent and Lindsay barely refer to it. Kingsford gives it a couple of pages, which it seems scarcely necessary to remark are disfigured by several grievous misprints and errors. Two of the leaders, Benjamin Wait and Linus Wilson Miller, wrote accounts of their captivity, but have little to say about the rising itself, and their statements, for obvious reasons, cannot as a rule be accepted without corroboration.
