Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy

Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy PDF Author: Paul R. Bown
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789401060561
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
Calcareous nannofossils are an exceptionally important microfossil group, with their living counterparts, coccolithopores, representing one of the major components of phytoplankton in present day oceans. Their abundant fossil record and world-wide distribution has led to their rapid acceptance as one of the most important index-fossil groups in stratigraphical research. The first two chapters of this book provide general information concerning calcareous nannofossils, including reviews of their biology and palaeobiology, and preparation and observation techniques. Chapters 3-9 are ordered stratigraphically, and present state-of-the-art summaries of calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy for each time period, with comprehensive illustrations of all taxa within a standardised classification based on the latest research into structure and biomineralization. The practical application of these biostratigraphic schemes is discussed, including comments on zones biogeography, taxonomy and evolution. This information is internationally relevant, and global correlation is discussed. Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy is the most comprehensive atlas of this fossil group ever produced, containing 65 full page plates with over 2,000 individual photographs, together with comments concerning stratigraphic distribution and identification. Chapters on the Mesozoic contain electron microscope illustrations as well as light micrographs. The inclusion of much recent, previously unpublished, research provides a new level of biostratigraphic resolution for a number of time periods, making the book both a valuable synthesis and a significant step forward in biogeographical research. Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy is a comprehensive practical handbook for palaeontologists and organizations who use calcareous nannofossils in biostratigraphy, and provides a valuable practical reference work for earth scientists engaged in stratigraphic research, and those interested in palaeontology, palaeoceanography, stratigraphy and geochronology.

Terminal Eocene Events

Terminal Eocene Events PDF Author: C. Pomerol
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080868509
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 431

Book Description
The papers in this volume provide an exhaustive inventory and description of the most complete sedimentary sequences across the Eocene-Oligocene Boundary (EOB) from all over the world, and present a synthesis of the biotic and chemico-physical events detected at the Eocene-Oligocene transition. The content of the book represents the results achieved by Project no. 174 on ``Geological Events at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary'' of the International Geological Correlation Program, sponsored by UNESCO. The project was carried out over a five year period and has provided a wealth of new and interesting information.

Paleoecology, Biostratigraphy, Paleoceanography and Taxonomy of Agglutinated Foraminifera

Paleoecology, Biostratigraphy, Paleoceanography and Taxonomy of Agglutinated Foraminifera PDF Author: Christoph Hemleben
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401133506
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1002

Book Description
Agglutinated foraminifera are among the most widely distributed and abundant groups of marine meiofauna in some environments (e. g. marshes, deep-sea). They are tolerant of environmental extremes, tending to live where the evolutionarily more advanced calcareous foraminifera cannot survive. However, largely because of historical reasons, the amount of scientific effort invested in this group has been small in comparison to studies of other marine organisms. The NATO Advanced Studies Institute conference on the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera in TUbingen September 17-29, 1989, was a direct outgrowth of two previous workshops on agglutinated foraminifers held in Amsterdam in September 1981 (IW AF I) and in Vienna in June 1986 (IW AF 11). As such, the TUbingen conference constitutes the Third International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera (IW AF III) and was organised to provide a platform for synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this group of organisms, and to strengthen interactions between basic research and applied micropaleontology. One of the main underlying themes of the conferen:e was to identify topics in the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera which are in urgent need of further research. About 80 scientists and students from 5 continents participated in the TUbingen conference, which is one measure of the growth in interest in agglutinated foraminifers over the past decade. During four days of technical sessions, scientific results were communicated in the form of 34 oral presentations and 15 poster displays.

Eocene-Oligocene Climatic and Biotic Evolution

Eocene-Oligocene Climatic and Biotic Evolution PDF Author: Donald R. Prothero
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400862922
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 583

Book Description
The transition from the Eocene to the Oligocene epochs was the most significant event in earth history since the extinction of dinosaurs. As the first Antarctic ice sheets appeared, major extinctions and faunal turnovers took place on the land and in the sea, eliminating forms adapted to a tropical world and replacing them with the ancestors of most of our modern animal and plant life. Through a detailed study of climatic conditions and of organisms buried in Eocene-Oligocene sediments, this volume shows that the separation of Antarctica from Australia was a critical factor in changing oceanic circulation and ultimately world climate. In this book forty-eight leading scientists examine the full range of Eocene and Oligocene phenomena. Their articles cover nearly every major group of organisms in the ocean and on land and include evidence from paleontology, stable isotopes, sedimentology, seismology, and computer climatic modeling. The volume concludes with an update of the geochronologic framework of the late Paleogene. Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
