The monitored haul-outs are located at Cape Peirce and Cape Newenham (at the southern end of Togiak National Wildlife Refuge) and at Hagemeister Island (part of the Bering Sea Unit of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge). Monitoring methods have included ground counts, aerial surveys, and year-round time lapse photography using remote cameras (each type during different time periods). Monitoring was conducted to determine the number of walruses and timing of haul-outs, to estimate peak walrus numbers, and to determine the annual minimum known population at these three locations. Statistics cover the years 1985 to 2018.
