Book Description
Australian Investment Education Outrageous Market Predictions for 2014. Over the course of the year, we add a variety of topics to our article banks. Typically this provides us 20 plus areas to consider and then we drop this list down into the dirty dozen. These are the key markets or instruments we trade, plus a couple of additional mainstream interest pieces like Bitcoin, Facebook and so on. One of the big competitive advantages we have over most traders, is our own in house team of analysts and sales traders so a couple of chats and lunches with the guys, often reveals some absolute gems, in terms of core trading points and views. This year, the 12 areas we are looking at in Outrageous Predictions 2014 are as follows: Facebook The World’s leading social media company has flexed its muscles this year. Breaking the stigma of its listing and languishing share price. China The outlook for China and its rampant economic growth has been the source of much controversy amongst market participants, traders, research analysts and just about anyone else out there. Exchange Traded Funds ETFs have been a massive growth area for traders and investors who are looking to isolate or invest in particular scenarios and opportunities. The Australian Banking Sector 2013 has been all about finding yield and as a result, the Aussie Big Four banking stocks have been major beneficiaries of their dividend policy. US Economy The world’s largest economy forms the mainstay of any economic forecast and outlook for markets. QE is its $85bn a month habit – how is this working for the US, what is in store for the new year and where will we be looking to bank profits? Australian Economy Our domestic economy has shown several colours in 2013 – from doom and despair to opportunity and profit. There have been a variety of factors behind this and several which will carry into 2014. Australian and US dollars The relationship between this pair is critical from a trade and traders’ perspective. With the big variation to date in economic activity and interest rate cycles setting the current framework, it looks increasingly likely that the tide is about to turn. Apple There is no question that Apple’s business is changing – it had to. With change always comes risk, and always comes opportunity. Crude Oil We try our best to find alternatives but it is almost impossible to live without it! Oil has been one of the most interesting markets this year. BHP Billiton Iron ore isn’t exciting, its not pretty, its not cutting edge but it is the backbone of what has been propping up the Aussie economy. Gold In terms of price, gold really has had a year to forget. As the saying goes, the past is history, the future a mystery and the present is a gift. Bitcoin No 2014 outlook would be complete without a look at Bitcoin – doubter or believer, what is the story with this overnight phenomena – marketing hype or commercial success?

Outrageous Fortunes

Outrageous Fortunes PDF Author: Daniel Altman
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 9781429950497
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
A Harvard-trained economist's startling predictions reveal critical challenges in the decades ahead, helping individuals, businesses, and governments to make smarter decisions As individuals, companies, and countries struggle to recover from the economic crisis, many are narrowly focused on forecasts for the next week, month, or quarter. Yet they should be asking what the global economy will look like in the years to come—where will the long-term risks and opportunities arise? These are the questions that Daniel Altman confronts in his provocative and indispensable book. The fate of the global economy, Altman argues, will be determined by deeper factors than those that move markets from moment to moment. His incisive analysis brings together hidden trends, societal pressures, and policy endgames to make twelve surprising but logical predictions about the years ahead. And his forecasts for the future raise a pressing question for today: With so many challenges awaiting us, are our political and economic institutions up to the task? Outrageous Fortunes tells which industries will grow, which economies will crumble, which investments will pay off, and where the next big crisis may occur. Altman's carefully reasoned text is an essential guide for the road ahead.

Superforecasting

Superforecasting PDF Author: Philip E. Tetlock
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 080413670X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE ECONOMIST “The most important book on decision making since Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow.”—Jason Zweig, The Wall Street Journal Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week’s meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts’ predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight, and Tetlock has spent the past decade trying to figure out why. What makes some people so good? And can this talent be taught? In Superforecasting, Tetlock and coauthor Dan Gardner offer a masterwork on prediction, drawing on decades of research and the results of a massive, government-funded forecasting tournament. The Good Judgment Project involves tens of thousands of ordinary people—including a Brooklyn filmmaker, a retired pipe installer, and a former ballroom dancer—who set out to forecast global events. Some of the volunteers have turned out to be astonishingly good. They’ve beaten other benchmarks, competitors, and prediction markets. They’ve even beaten the collective judgment of intelligence analysts with access to classified information. They are "superforecasters." In this groundbreaking and accessible book, Tetlock and Gardner show us how we can learn from this elite group. Weaving together stories of forecasting successes (the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound) and failures (the Bay of Pigs) and interviews with a range of high-level decision makers, from David Petraeus to Robert Rubin, they show that good forecasting doesn’t require powerful computers or arcane methods. It involves gathering evidence from a variety of sources, thinking probabilistically, working in teams, keeping score, and being willing to admit error and change course. Superforecasting offers the first demonstrably effective way to improve our ability to predict the future—whether in business, finance, politics, international affairs, or daily life—and is destined to become a modern classic.

Flying for Gps

Flying for Gps PDF Author: Len Jacobson
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1499004257
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
Most books on GPS are quite technical and concentrate on the satellites and/or receiver design. This book is about user equipment evolution from expensive, complex and voluminous military sets to todays low-cost chips buried in our cell phones. It traces a system designed primarily for military and civilian aircraft, ships and land vehicles to an essential utility of everyday life, enabling new businesses, more safety and the ability to track everything that moves. In parallel with the evolution of GPS is the evolution of commercial air travel as experienced by the author, starting from a flight on a Pan Am 707 in 1963 to a recent one on an Air France A380. Part II is a memoir written for the GPS community, people who have met or been influenced or educated about GPS by the author and anyone else interested in this facet of GPS history. It describes the tribulations that accompanied the development GPS user equipment and some of their first applications. What makes the book an autobiography is the inclusion of Part I, which is for the authors friends and family and anyone else interested in his early development.

Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions

Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions PDF Author: Kristin E. Reimer
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1641135069
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
Restorative justice (RJ) is an idea whose time may have finally arrived. Although the concept has ancient roots and the term has existed in Western societies since the 1970s, only recently has it gained general public recognition. In schools, RJ’s popularity is rising world-wide. In fact, education is the fastest growing area for the practice of RJ. Despite an increasing number of schools embracing the approach, it is not clear what educational RJ practitioners are trying to achieve. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions: How Restorative Justice is Used in Schools to Control and to Engage focuses on the use of RJ in one school in Scotland and one in Canada. While important to understand the intentions of educators in using RJ in schools, those aims must be examined alongside the actual impact that such practices have on students. RJ can be understood and experienced in dramatically different ways by those implementing it. For some, RJ is about creating an environment of and for student engagement that challenges traditional systems of discipline and facilitates learning. For others, RJ is simply another tool for solidifying compliance and meting out punishment, albeit in a kinder, gentler way. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions provides the opportunity to delve deeply into the stories of two schools and the adults and young people who inhabit them, and consider the broad impact that differing educator understandings of RJ have on students. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions is a timely book for RJ advocates and critics alike. It challenges a common assumption of some RJ advocates that implementing RJ necessarily creates a classroom environment of social engagement (where students are empowered to engage with one another and think critically, and school relationships and hierarchies are transformed). The student experience relayed in this book shows that RJ can as readily be mobilized to create classroom environments of social control (where students are taught obedience and compliance, and authority and hierarchy are reinforced). Reimer argues that RJ, by itself, does not guarantee certain qualities of relationship, but RJ does allow us to examine relational qualities and ask questions of how school relationships are used to engage and/or control students.
