During the operating life of the no. 26 colliery of the Sydney coalfield, violent dynamic phenomena described as rock and gas outbursts occurred whenever sandstone erosion channels were located within 2.7 m of the coal seam. Although this colliery has been closed, the problem is considered serious and research has continued. This report forms a part of this continuing research program, addressing microseismic monitoring techniques for the prediction of rock and gas outbursts within the Sydney coalfield. The report discusses the interaction between coal and gas which produces outbursts, reviews the work undertaken on the outburst occurrences at no. 26 colliery and draws parallels between these outbursts and those in other countries. An overview of microseismic/acoustic monitoring is given, summarizing the systems identified with coal mining, hard rock mining and evaporite deposit mining. The report then describes a microseismic system designed for use within the Sydney coalfield which is divided into an overall mine environmental monitoring system and local arrays.

Preliminary field trials were carried out to detect microseismic activity around roadway driveage operations at the Cape Breton Development Corp.'s Lingan Colliery in the Sydney Coalfield. The driveages of Lingan Colliery were approaching similar depths to the No 26 Colliery that had experienced several violent sandstone/gas outbursts during blasting when mining had approached within 2.7 m of a sandstone erosion channel at 700-800m. This project investigated the possibility that sandstone/gas bursts could occur (in the absence of blasting) through a mechanism resulting from microseismic activity and/or acoustic emission. A Roctest Geo-Monitor portable geophone and monitor was used to establish whether dynamic rock failure takes place in the rock at the Lingan faces during the advance of the faces by roadheader. A BMX blast monitor was used to record the characteristic ground motion during and after several blasts, including brushing blasts and updip development blasting, to detect any microseismic activity that may have been triggered as a result of the blasting.
