Never Forgotten

Never Forgotten PDF Author: Jenny La Sala

Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 440

Book Description
When the Vietnam Veterans tours were over, they came home to find a country divided and a nation unappreciative of their service. How they were treated, how they integrated back into society, and how their wartime experiences changed them are just some of the questions answered, as their stories unfold in Never Forgotten. Told by the Veterans themselves, these are their stories. "The book Never Forgotten, captures 58 Veterans accounts and others on what it was like to experience the Vietnam War. In their own words, they talk about their return home, struggles to maintain healthy relationships, decades of recovery, and feelings of worthlessness. Many find emotional well-being and self-worth by helping other Veterans. Those of us who are Veterans or whose loved ones have served in war, know with certainty we are different when we return home, than before we marched off to war. Because of this difference, for ourselves and for those we love and enjoy having in our lives, Never Forgotten is a must read." ~ Michael B. Christy, Lt. Col. USA (ret) and Vietnam Veteran

Book Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize–winning novel The Remains of the Day comes a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory. In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share. By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.

Book Description
My earlier book, The Wrights of Vermont (Wheatmark, 2013), reported the search I began about ten years ago for my father's Vermont forebears. I had learned a lot, especially about my grandmother's heroic efforts to save her shaky marriage. Eventually she left Vermont to begin a new life on Staten Island for herself and her two sons, Dad and Uncle Ray. This book shows Dad and Mother starting their family on Staten Island and describes our home, our neighborhood, the boarding house where we sometimes dined, the schools we attended, the songs we sang, how we learned to think about money, work, fun, guilt, and politics, and our experience, especially mine, of illness, solitude, and books. Later chapters show our horizons expanding. They tell where we went on outings and how we spent our summers (ours at a riverside cottage near the New Jersey coast, and mine at an unusual summer camp in upstate New York), and they sketch the different world we found when we moved to Manhattan in 1941. I entered Columbia then and began to discover new realms of literature, philosophy, and music. Then at eighteen, with other young men of that time, I was swept up into military service in the U.S. Army and war in France and Germany.

The 1930s: A Decade of Modern British Fiction PDF Author: Nick Hubble
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350079154
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
With austerity biting hard and fascism on the march at home and abroad, the Britain of the 1930s grappled with many problems familiar to us today. Moving beyond the traditional focus on 'the Auden generation', this book surveys the literature of the period in all its diversity, from working class, women, queer and postcolonial writers to popular crime and thriller novels. In this way, the book explores the uneven processes of modernization and cultural democratization that characterized the decade. A major critical re-evaluation of the decade, the book covers such writers as Eric Ambler, Mulk Raj Anand, Katharine Burdekin, Agatha Christie, Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Christopher Isherwood, Storm Jameson, Ethel Mannin, Naomi Mitchison, George Orwell, Christina Stead, Evelyn Waugh and many others.

Sunshine and Rain in the Mist of the Cold War

Sunshine and Rain in the Mist of the Cold War PDF Author: Frederick Wulff
Publisher: Outskirts Press

Category : History

Pages : 134

Book Description
An ancient proverb goes: "It takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow." In a sense this book is an autobiography of a young man who experienced sunshine and rain throughout life that ended up at the end of a rainbow. The story spans ten years, from early teens to young adulthood, and relates the author's perception of the world around him. He was wet behind the ears during the advent of the Cold War and the accompanying Red Scare; however, vivid memories of this period survived intact and are worthy of sharing. This journal takes the reader back to an interesting and unique time through accounts of unusual personal experiences, some stranger than fiction. At times some historical facts from various sources have been inserted to help buttress statements. Hopefully this book will assist others to live vicariously an exciting decade of history, 1945 to 1955. President Truman presided over the national turmoil after WWII. Racism reared its ugly head again. Everyone was looking under their bed and in the closets for communists. These two themes will be covered thoroughly in this book. Yet, the era also saw soldiers returning home from the war, restored family life, the baby boom underway and more sought-after consumer items were beginning to reappear on the grocery shelves. Moreover churches seemed to be revitalized and the pews were being filled again with attentive worshipers. Church attendance for Christians was placed as high as 74%. Most of us after WW II enjoyed rock and roll music, checked out new car models, viewed movies from our cars at drive-in theatres and visited friends parked in the stalls of drive-in restaurants. In the postwar 40's, who could forget how the entire family gathered around the living room radio for an evening of broadcast shows like: Date with Judy, the Aldrich Family, Amos & Andy, Baby Snook, Bob Hope, George Burns, Judy Canova, and Red Skeleton. Wonderful sound effects helped us to visualize everything in our minds. It all s

Latro in the Mist

Latro in the Mist PDF Author: Gene Wolfe
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 0765302942
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 642

Book Description
This omnibus of two acclaimed novels is the story of Latro, a Roman mercenary who was fighting in Greece when he received a head injury that deprived him of his short-term memory but gave him in return the ability to see and converse with the supernatural creatures, the gods and goddesses, who invisibly inhabit the classical landscape. Latro forgets everything when he sleeps. Writing down his experiences every day and reading his journal anew each morning gives him a poignantly tenuous hold on himself, but his story's hold on readers is powerful indeed.
