Book Description
The zeolite ion exchanger clinoptilolite was investigated with the objective of optimizing its application to ammonia removal from wastewaters. The study included multiple cycle pilot plant operations at three municipal sewage treatment plants. Particular attention was given to cation interference with exhaustion performance and with minimum cost regeneration. The ammonia capacity of clinoptilolite was found to be nearly constant over the pH range of 4 to 8, but diminished rapidly outside this range. In regeneration the pH was critical in determining the NaCl requirements, a higher pH favoring lesser amounts of salt. However, at a pH over 12.5 zeolite attrition became excessive and exchanger makeup contributed significantly to operating costs. An average ammonia removal of 95.7% was obtained in demonstration studies on three municipal wastes have an NH3N content of about 20 mg/l. The cost of ammonia removal using clinoptilolite for a 10-mgd plant operating under these conditions was estimated to be $0.082/1000 gal. Ammonia removal down to less than 0.5 mg/l NH3−N is technically feasible, but only with shorter exhaustion runs and greater regenerant requirements.

System for Total Direct Recycle of Secondary Municipal Wastewater

System for Total Direct Recycle of Secondary Municipal Wastewater PDF Author:

Book Description
A study was performed leading to the design of a system to treat municipal secondary effluent to potable quality and allow closed-loop water utilization. A comprehensive literature survey resulted in the acquisition of other 800 papers and reports on all advanced wastewater treatment processes. Summary evaluations were prepared for the important processes. A definition of a set of potable water quality criteria parameters was developed for the specific case of closed-loop water reuse. Mathematical models for performance and costs were compiled for the individual processes. A computer program in Fortran was assembled incorporating the cost and performance models of the processes as subroutines. The resulting computer program represents a mathematical model of the conceptual system and can be used to perform design calculations of optional combinations of the processes.

Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites

Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites PDF Author: Fred A. Mumpton

Book Description
Volume 4 of Reviews in Mineralogy was prepared to serve as notes for a short course on the Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites held in Seattle, Washington, November 4-6, 1977. The title of the short course reads Natural Zeolites; however, the subject matter treated in the course and reviewed here deals primarily with those zeolites that occur in sedimentary rocks and which have formed by authigenic or burial diagenetic processes. Unfortunately, only limited coverage has been given to the classical occurrences of zeolites--the megascopic crystals in the vugs and cavities of basalts and other basic igneous rocks. Our only justification is that since the late 1950s, almost all major efforts on zeolites have been directed towards the "sedimentary" occurrences, and it is these occurrences of zeolites in sedimentary rocks that are still unfamiliar to many geologists and mineralogists. It is our intention that this short course and these notes will play a small role in alleviating this unfamiliarity.
