Book Description
We have developed a non-linear multi-objective model for optimal design of railway timetables. The objectives of the model are to maximize schedule reliability and minimize energy consumption, rolling stock and crew deployment. Metrics have been derived for each of these objectives. AHP is used to determine the relative weights of the objectives, while GCA & TOPSIS techniques are used for optimization, which is demonstrated on a test case.

Computers in Railways XIV Special Contributions

Computers in Railways XIV Special Contributions PDF Author: C.A. Brebbia
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1784660256
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This volume contains special contributions presented at the 14th International Conference on Railway Engineering Design and Operation (COMPRAIL/14) held in Rome. It is a companion to the Volume containing most of the contributions (Vol 135 of WIT Transactions on the Built Environment) and comprises papers presented orally during the Conference. Encouraging the update and use of advanced systems, the book promotes their general awareness throughout the management, design, manufacture and operation of railways and other emerging passenger, freight and transit systems. It particularly emphasises the use of computer systems in advanced railway engineering. The book consists of five sections, covering: Planning; Computer techniques and simulations; Energy supply and consumption; Monitoring and control; Safety and security.

Optimal Design of Timetables for Large Railways

Optimal Design of Timetables for Large Railways PDF Author: Bodhibrata Nag
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783838338491
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
This monograph presents a framework for optimum design of timetables to maximise schedule robustness and minimise resource deployment, especially for large railway networks, wherein the problem has been formulated as a multi-objective non-linear model. The monograph s contribution is the formulation of methods to reduce the problem size to computationally manageable proportions, and thus enable planners to undertake network-wide optimisation studies. The monograph demonstrates that the design of timetables can be spread over a canvas incorporating not only over the entire railway network, thus enabling study of the mutual interactions across the network, but also involving the optimisation of crew and rolling stock in the purview of the model. This can thus emulate the planning process more truthfully, wherein piecemeal optimisations are of little import. This monograph should be especially useful for researchers engaged in problems pertaining to railway networks, railway network planners, railway decision support software developers or one interested in industrial applications of operations research.

Optimization Models for Energy-efficient Railway Timetables

Optimization Models for Energy-efficient Railway Timetables PDF Author: Shuvomoy Das Gupta

Book Description
This thesis presents two novel optimization models to calculate energy-efficient railway timetables in a railway network. The first optimization model is a mixed integer programming one, which saves energy by maximizing the total overlapping time between the braking and accelerating phases of suitable train pairs. However, it suffers from some limitations associated with NP-hard computational complexity and modeling of energy saving strategy. To overcome the limitations of the first model, we propose a second optimization model consisting of two stages. The first stage of this model minimizes the total energy consumed by all trains and the second stage maximizes the transfer of regenerative braking energy between suitable train pairs. Both of these stages are solvable in polynomial time, compared to other existing models, which are NP-hard. The two-stage model has proven to be very effective in practice and has been incorporated into an industrial railway timetable compiler.

The Urban Rail Development Handbook

The Urban Rail Development Handbook PDF Author: Daniel Pulido
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 146481273X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 845

Book Description
Cities across the globe are looking to develop affordable, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible transportation solutions that can meet the accessibility needs of expanding metropolitan populations and support future economic and urban development. When appropriately planned and properly implemented as part of a larger public transportation network, urban rail systems can provide rapid mobility and vital access to city centers from surrounding districts. High-performing urban rail services, when carefully approached as development projects, can help enhance quality of life by giving citizens access to employment opportunities, essential services, urban amenities, and neighboring communities. The purpose of this Handbook is to synthesize and disseminate knowledge to inform the planning, implementation, and operations of urban rail projects with a view towards: -- Emphasizing the need for early studies and project planning; -- Making projects more sustainable (economically, socially, and environmentally); -- Improving socioeconomic returns and access to opportunities for users; -- Maximizing the value of private participation, where appropriate; and -- Building capacity within project implementing and managing institutions This Handbook provides experiential advice to tackle the technical, institutional, and financial challenges faced by decision makers considering urban rail projects. It brings together the expertise of World Bank staff and the input of numerous specialists to synthesize international 'good practices' and recommendations that are independent of commercial, financial political, or other interests. The material presented is intended as an honest-broker guide to maximize the impact and manage the challenges of urban rail systems in cities in both developed and developing countries. Rather than identify a single approach, this Handbook acknowledges the complexities and context necessary when approaching an urban rail development by helping to prepare decision makers to ask the right questions, consider the key issues, perform the necessary studies, apply adequate tools, and learn from international good practice all at the right time in the project development process.
