Book Description
One hungry heron, tall and still, crooks her legand tips her bill. The scene starts out quietly enough, but soon the lone heron is joined by two lazy catfish and three darting dragonflies. Before you can say ten tiny turtles, the pond is alive with a great array of wetland wildlife. Told in clever rhyme, this is a counting book with a difference. Numbers are spelled out in bold text, decorated numerals adorn each page, and amounts are depicted by groupings of swimming, flapping, paddling, darting pond creatures. Up to ten and down again, the count goes forwards and backwards, as thunder rumbles in the background. Plip, plop, the rain begins and lightning flashes. Everything dives for shelter and stays hidden 0́4 until the sun comes out. Then life returns to the pond providing a delightful search and count last page. Rarely is so much delivered in one spectacular counting book.

Book Description
"Pinker has a lot of ideas and sometimes controversial opinions about writing and in this entertaining and instructive book he rethinks the usage guide for the 21st century. Don't blame the internet, he says, good writing has always been hard. It requires imagination, taking pleasure in reading, overcoming the difficult we all have in imaging what it's like to not know something we do know."--Publisher information.

The Herons of Europe

The Herons of Europe PDF Author: Claire Voisin
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1408135825
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Although the majority of the world's Herons live in the tropics and subtropics, Europe is home to nine species, some large, some small, some colonial, some solitary breeders. Highly specialized birds, they exhibit many interesting differences in their behaviour and ecology and are a favourite group for many ornithologists. Voisin begins her book with a general description of the family before going on to treat each species in more detail. The species accounts summarize such topics as field characters, distribution, population size, breeding and feeding ecology and behaviour. Numerous figures and tables are accompanied by fine drawings of behaviour by P. L. Suiro and colour and black and white pictures of each species by Gunnar Brusewitz.
