It works and troubles and urges, until, sooner or later, some form of transmutation must take place, some condensing into form of the formless, some passing of impulse into expression, be it what it may. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ...his bad luck in being sent to Vintimiglia, amidst the snows of the Alps at Christmas time, to quell a riot occasioned by the assassination by adherents of Pompey of one of their citizens for having entertained Julius Caesar on his way to Spain at the outset of the civil war."--Quoted by W. H. (Bullock) Hall in The Romans on the Riviera and the Rhone. Defeated near Mutina, Antony was at once pursued by Decimus Brutus, and fled by way of Vada Sabata across the Maritime Alps towards the Esterels. The coast road he chose must have been particularly arduous and difficult for his disorganized forces and undisciplined followers; for there was hardly any food or water on the way. "Antony," writes Plutarch, "was in misfortune most nearly a virtuous man." Overtaken by famine and by distresses of every kind, he set a splendid example of endurance to his troops. " He who had just quitted so much luxury and sumptuous living, made no difficulty now of drinking foul water and feeding on wild fruits and roots. Book Description
Excerpt from Honor Carmichael, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study Their daughters are graceful and fair (one afterwards married the Duc de Pro vence, and the other an anglo-indian Officer, whose fortunes she followed in peace and in war). They are well spoken of far and near, highly respected, greatly esteemed; but the memory of the Old family is still fondly cherished, and their absence is still deeply deplored - at least, so says Madame Pleon; and it may be true, for it is the way of the world not to know when it is well off, and to waste itself in unending regrets. DO you wonder what all this has to do with Honor Carmichael? How the his tory of that old chateau in Provence can affect the simple story of a London clergy man's child? Wait and see.
