Lost Virginia Beach

Lost Virginia Beach PDF Author: Amy Waters Yarsinske
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1625842325
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
Join author and historian Amy Waters Yarsinske as she takes one final stroll through a Virginia Beach lost to time. The Oceanfront's Cottage Line, the music halls of Seaside Park and dunes so large they dwarfed the old Cape Henry lighthouse are a memory. Gone, too, are many of the city's iconic landmarks and open spaces, lost to storm, fire and the relentless onslaught of post-World War II development. With a deft hand and rare vintage images, historian Amy Waters Yarsinske recalls a time when the likes of Chuck Berry and Ray Charles played beneath the sizzling lights of the Dome and locals shagged the night away at the Peppermint Beach Club.

For 43 years, until the age of 80, Harriet kept her light burning, through storms, harsh winters, and changes in technology. This true story focuses on Harriet's commitment and determination to fulfilling her charge and living life on her own terms. Excerpts from her actual log are included.

Fort Story and Cape Henry

Fort Story and Cape Henry PDF Author: Fielding Lewis Tyler
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738518220
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
On April 26, 1607, the English colonists anchored at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and came ashore to the historic piece of land they named Cape Henry. Then, in 1917, a military post was established and fortified to protect the southern portion of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay during World War I; it was named Fort Story. Expanded and heavily fortified to meet the demands of the Second World War, the post served as a principal installation for the Harbor Defenses of Chesapeake Bay. The big guns fell silent after that conflict, and the post became the "Home of Army Amphibians" with over-the-beach operations. Today Fort Story continues to provide a superb training installation for the Army Transportation Corps and Special Operations.
