Book Description
Andrew Forge was an English painter and a teacher of painting (Yale University 1975–1994), renowned and respected on both sides of the Atlantic. But he was also known for his writing on the arts, spanning almost fifty years, which was admired for the delicacy and openness of his language and the ways in which he thought about the processes of perception in all their sensual possibilities. The selection here of his writings is intended to show the range of his interests and the particularly personal interpretations he brought to all he saw in an art with which he was so passionately engaged. It is also a fascinating record of the arts that were of concern in the years he wrote, from the work of Rubens to that of Rauschenberg and Frankenthaler, as well as, especially in his last essays, the work of his many friends and associates: Kenneth Martin, Euan Uglow, Jake Berthot, William Bailey, and Graham Nickson.

Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812814531
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 227
Book Description
This book addresses the task of processing online handwritten notes acquired from an electronic whiteboard, which is a new modality in handwriting recognition research. The main motivation of this book is smart meeting rooms, aim to automate standard tasks usually performed by humans in a meeting. The book can be summarized as follows. A new online handwritten database is compiled, and four handwriting recognition systems are developed. Moreover, novel preprocessing and normalization strategies are designed especially for whiteboard notes and a new neural network based recognizer is applied. Commercial recognition systems are included in a multiple classifier system. The experimental results on the test set show a highly significant improvement of the recognition performance to more than 86%.

Participant Observation
Author: Kathleen Musante DeWalt
Publisher: Rowman Altamira
ISBN: 0759119279
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 291
Book Description
Participant observation is the foundation of ethnographic research design and supports and complements other types of qualitative and quantitative data collection. Qualitative research in such diverse areas as anthropology, sociology, education, medicine draws on the insights gained through the use of participant observation. The authors have written a guide to the collection of systematic data in naturalistic settings - communities in many different cultures - to achieve an understanding of the most fundamental processes and patterns of social life. This book serves as a basic primer for the beginning researcher and as a useful reference and guide for experienced researchers in many fields who wish to reexamine their own skills and abilities in light of best practices of participant observation. This new edition includes discussions of participant observation in nontypical settings, such as the Internet, participant observation in applied research, and ethics of participant observation. It also explores in greater depth the use of computer-assisted analysis of textual data in issues of sampling and in linking method with theory.

Animal Movement
Author: Mevin B. Hooten
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466582154
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 306
Book Description
The study of animal movement has always been a key element in ecological science, because it is inherently linked to critical processes that scale from individuals to populations and communities to ecosystems. Rapid improvements in biotelemetry data collection and processing technology have given rise to a variety of statistical methods for characterizing animal movement. The book serves as a comprehensive reference for the types of statistical models used to study individual-based animal movement. Animal Movement is an essential reference for wildlife biologists, quantitative ecologists, and statisticians who seek a deeper understanding of modern animal movement models. A wide variety of modeling approaches are reconciled in the book using a consistent notation. Models are organized into groups based on how they treat the underlying spatio-temporal process of movement. Connections among approaches are highlighted to allow the reader to form a broader view of animal movement analysis and its associations with traditional spatial and temporal statistical modeling. After an initial overview examining the role that animal movement plays in ecology, a primer on spatial and temporal statistics provides a solid foundation for the remainder of the book. Each subsequent chapter outlines a fundamental type of statistical model utilized in the contemporary analysis of telemetry data for animal movement inference. Descriptions begin with basic traditional forms and sequentially build up to general classes of models in each category. Important background and technical details for each class of model are provided, including spatial point process models, discrete-time dynamic models, and continuous-time stochastic process models. The book also covers the essential elements for how to accommodate multiple sources of uncertainty, such as location error and latent behavior states. In addition to thorough descriptions of animal movement models, differences and connections are also emphasized to provide a broader perspective of approaches.
